Free Music Review: One of the Finest Albums to Drop From the Bay Area

Produced by the ill Ant Banks (best known for Too $hort's funky releases) and hitting from the Bay Area, Spice 1 dropped a well-respected (though painfully overlooked) classic with 'AmeriKKKa's Nightmare.
It usually takes me a bit to get used to a particular album, but this is one of those rare releases that sounded great to me even on the initial play. Spice 1's delivery and Ant Bank's unique, dark production work extremely well here.
All of the subjects presented on 'AmeriKKKa's Nightmare' are strictly gangsta related, but Spice 1's lyrical content is different from that of, say, Death Row. While the artists on that label often got silly and filled some of their songs with sexual content, Spice 1 prefers to keep it real and mostly just raps about the hard edged aspects of this lifestyle.
The production often varies from song to song (there's the real dark material like 'You Can Get the Gat for That' and 'Busta's Can't See Me', but it occasionally lightens up on songs like 'Stickin' To the G Code'. The lyrical content is largely the same for all of the tracks, however).
In terms of guest slots, it's very slim here, thus giving Spice 1 more time to shine on his own. Even when a guest does appear, however, they add nothing but greatness to an already superb album: E-40, 2Pac, and Method Man round out the guest list and all do a terrific job on here.
Really, there's no excuse not to pick up this album. Chances are, if you're reading this review, you're curious. If you want to hear some of the best that the Bay Area has to offer, then you have no choice than to give 'AmeriKKKa's Nightmare' a try.
