Free Music Notes for SpiceFree Music Review: Always A Classic Hit: 5 Stars
I remember the first time I heard Wannabe on the radio -- I was hooked. In 8th grade at the time and looking for style and attitude, I found it in these five wonderful young girls. Emma (Baby Spice), Mel C (Sporty Spice), Victoria (Posh Spice), Geri (Ginger Spice), and Mel B (Scary Spice) all had distinct personalities and their music was fun and exciting. They were the biggest thing in Britain since the Beatles, and it didn't take long for them to conquer the rest of the planet, including the picky USA. This album is a classic, and I think everybody should have it in their collection. More memorable than any other Spice album, it will truly make an impression. Here's the play by play for this album, "Spice":
Wannabe:
Tell me whatcha want, whatcha really really want -- Wannabe Wannabe Wannabe! Who hasn't heard this song? Of course, we all had our own made-up versions of the rap break, all with different words and different styles. If you haven't heard this song, it's the perfect girl-power, good-timey, happy and perky thing, coated with spice and sugar as well. Each of the girls gets their own section to sing and Geri and Mel B battle on the rap intro, with Mel C shouting 'hu'! Arguably their best song ever, "Wannabe" is a classic radio tune and can still be heard today. 10/10
Say You'll Be There:
If I'm not mistaken, this single actually outsold "Wannabe" (and "Wannabe" was #1 in 32 countries!). This began the heigth of the girls' careers and in this song each girl got an identity, with Emma as Kung Fu Candy and Geri as Trixie Firecracker etc. The girls, having firmly made their own real-life identities well known by this time, played with them to create even bigger alter-egos. Not as hyped or as loud as "Wannabe", "Say You'll Be There" was a bit slower but didn't lack for in-your-face lyrics. Another classic with a harmonica solo, it's still fun and spunky. 10/10
2 Become 1:
With this song, the boys could like it and that's what helped make it so big. This was the first big ballad the girls did, and it helped make them bigger as singers and not just celebrities. They could actually show off more of their vocal talent than just vamp around singing short and sweet lyrics. Highlights of this song are the string arrangement and the chorus, which is soulful but not shrewd. A very nice love song with an important part for every girl, "2 Become 1" was another #1 for the Spices. 10/10
Love Thing:
A lot of people didn't care much for this song, but what made it good was the rap done by every girl in the bridge section. A bit more disco but not any less spicy, the girls make it clear in this song that they aren't playing around. Though this song was never the best concerning instruments, it still makes its mark. 9/10
Last Time Lover:
I always thought this song was one of the best, simply because Mel B sings very low in it, which makes it a sexy and va-va-voomish type song. Another fun thing about this song is the chorus, in which they sing "do you think I'm really cool and sexy?" Very fun, very Spice Girls-ish. Instrumentally I like the guitars in this song. 10/10
Mama:
Aww, a song for their mommies. Who hasn't done a song for those special ladies? This song also went to #1 and gave the girls a deeper side as apposed to their craziness. Like "2 Become 1", this song has some beautiful string sections, which makes it a lovely ballad. 9/10
Who Do You Think You Are:
Now THIS is a classic disco type song. Complete with quick lyrics and a raspy singing Geri, this song is just plain fun with warped guitars and fast paced brass. The video, with it's crazy and colorful presentation, helped define the girls' individuality that much more. 10/10
Something Kinda Funny:
Originally set to be the girls' first single, this tune has a sensual disposition hidden within jazzy music and soft teasing vocals. It's simple, stylish, and catchy. Despite it's appeal however, it's much more mature than "Wannabe", and while that doesn't make it any less good, it's not nearly as fun. However, it's nice to hear the girls taking a different approach. 9/10
Naked:
After seeing this song title, two words came to mind: Janet Jackson. But it is hardly anything shrewd and actually portrays a very thought-provoking concept. I would actually call this the most soulful song on the entire album. It's beautifully written, wonderfully sung and simply emits maturity. Stylistically, it falls somewhere between a spanish ballad and a jazzclub number. 10/10
If U Can't Dance:
The Spices close out their debut in grand style with this fantastic dance number! With a sliding bassline, raps by both Mel B and Geri (rapping in Spanish), and a great beat, many have called this their favorite track on "Spice". It leaves you wanting more. 10/10
Normally, I'm not a big fan of albums with only 10 tracks on them. But somehow, it works for the Spices, helping the public to remember not to take them too seriously. It really gives off the impression that the girls are in it for a good time, and that perfectly compliments their carefree and infectious personalities. The album clocks in at around 40 minutes total, but that's okay, because you can just listen to "Wannabe" again sooner.
Free Music Review: Classic pop album from the Spice Girls Hit: 5 Stars
I'm finally writing a review for this album that was released 15 years ago but is still one of my favorite pop albums of all time. It actually went on to sell over 25 million copies worldwide which makes this one of the best selling albums of all time. It's well deserved. I'll go ahead & break down the album track by track for you if you happen to be one of the few people that haven't listened to this album.
01. Wannabe = 5/5 Stars
Everyone knows this song. It's short, simple & really catchy. The girls started writing this song just while having a laugh & joking around. It was so different & they later felt this song would introduce them to the world better than any other & they were right. The single alone went on to sell more copies than most albums sell. The verses & chorus are simple lyrically but it works. If you wannabe my lover, you gotta get with my friends. Fun song.
02. Say You'll Be There = 5/5 Stars
Released as the 2nd single, this song is just so much fun. This is a pure classic pop track. I love Emma & Geri's vocals on this song. The song is about being a relationship that really isn't going anywhere except in circles & needing your lover to be more expressive when it comes to their emotions & to be there for you more than they are right now. I also love the music video. One of their best.
03. 2 Become 1 = 5/5 Stars
This song is probably my favorite song on the album. I love the melodies & the girls' vocals are amazing. Lyrically & musically, this song is perfection. It really makes you feel like you wanna fall in love & if you are already in love, it makes you wanna be even closer to them. This song is so romantic & the video really pulls off that feeling as well. Amazing! One of my favorite singles.
04. Love Thing = 4/5 Stars
Love Thing is about your lover pushing you & rushing you into something you're not ready for. It also speaks of having your friends to lean on so you'll be okay even if your relationship ends which I think is a great message. This song is very catchy & another great pop track, just not as good as the other songs on the album in my opinion but I still love it.
05. Last Time Lover = 5/5 Stars
The girls never performed this song live & I think it's such a shame because it is one of my favorites on the album. I love Mel B's voice on this track. It's so low & kinda raspy...it sounds perfect & really sets the mood for the song. Very sexy.
06. Mama = 5/5 Stars
This was the 4th single released off of the album. It's a cute song with a cute video. Lyrically, I love what the girls have to say to their mums. Who can't relate to this song? I do think it's a bit cheesy at times but cheesy isn't always such a bad thing in my opinion.
07. Who Do You Think You Are = 5/5 Stars
What a great club track, seriously. Everything about this song is pure perfection. Great lyrics. Very sexy & very fun. The girls' vocals are brilliant here. I'm glad this was released as the 4th single along with Mama.
08. Something Kinda Funny = 4/5 Stars
I really like the mood of this song. I don't think it's one of the stronger tracks on the album but it's still a good song. It's a little more mellow & slow paced but it's very cheeky & very catchy. I think the song is better performed live but overall, still a great song.
09. Naked = 5/5 Stars
Who can forget the infamous performance of this song on tour? This is one of my favorite Spice Girls songs. I love the lyrics. I love the message in the song. It's about someone being deprived of the goodness in people & needing to be close to someone sexually to fill a void. That's what it speaks to me. So this is definitely the deepest song on the album for me. It's a dark subject but still very sexy.
10. If U Can't Dance = 5/5 Stars
Amazing song with amazing verses from Mel B & Geri. Love Emma's bridge...I think it's the best part of the song. Just a great, fun pop track that the girls used to open up their amazing world tours. Again, I prefer the live version but that doesn't take away the fact that this is a great dance track.
Overall, I rate "Spice" = 4.5/5 Stars
A classic pop album that broke so many records all over the world. It's a pretty short album but every track is great, there's no fillers & the album flows so well together. This is an album I think everyone should have in their music collection. I hope you enjoyed my review & please check out my other Spice Girls reviews.
Free Music Review: Spice (1996) Hit: 5 Stars
I was a huge Spice Girls fan back when they were more than just beautiful girls with sexy images. They remind me so much of my seventh grade year, as well as the summer after my seventh grade year. Everytime I put on this album, I go back to my seventh grade year and remember how much of a fan I was. First, let's introduce the girls. Starting with Geri Halliwell, aka "Ginger Spice". Geri, who was considered to be a favorite with most fans and considered to be the sexiest Spice Girl, called herself "Ginger Spice" because she was always seen in red, and it is a well-known fact that ginger is red. Next, we have Victoria Adams-Bechkam, aka "Posh Spice". Victoria, who happens to be the first prettiest Spice Girl in my book, called herself "Posh Spice" because she was raised in a very classy family. Thirdly, we have Melanie B., aka "Scary Spice". Melanie B., who is the second most prettiest Spice Girl in my book has called herself "Scary Spice" because she is constantly wearing leopard-skin outfits and has a pierced tongue. Fourthly, we have Melanie C., aka "Sporty Spice". It's obvious that Melanie C. has called herself "Sporty Spice" because of her Tomboy style, which consists of sports jerseys, sweat suits, jogging outfits, tanktops, and sneakers from the infamous Nike. Lastly, we have the adorable Emma Bunton, aka "Baby Spice". Emma has called herself "Baby Spice" because she is the youngest of the group. To add to her name, Emma dresses the part, wearing short pink skirts, rolled up socks, always putting her hair in pigtails, owning a lot of stuffed toy animals, and shows up at almost every promotional appearance sucking on a lollipop. Now, let's get to the album. WANNABE The first single from the album. Not only was this the first single released from the album, this was also the girls' first single ever. I remember the first time I heard this, that I immediately fell in love with it. The lyrics are real catchy and will have you dancing everytime you hear it. SAY YOU'LL BE THERE The second single from the album. Although Wannabe was major #1 hit, Say You'll Be There topped Wannabe by hitting #1 in 32 countries, including the U.S. This is a great song that talks about how the girls tell their boyfriends that they know their guys love them, but all the guys have to do is be there for the girls when the girls need them. 2 BECOME 1 The third single from the album. Yet another #1 hit for the girls. The girls decided to take a break from their uptempo songs and decided to release a sweet ballad for a change. The song is, indeed, about sex. If you didn't know that, just listen closely to the lyrics, especially when Emma sings her verses. The version on this album wasn't used for the video. Victoria's verse on this version is different from that of the video. On this version, Victoria says "Any deal that we endeavour, boys and girls feel good together. Take it or leave it, take it or leave it". In the video version, Victoria says, "Once again, if we endeavour, love will bring us back together. Take it or leave it, take it or leave it". LOVE THING Although I love the vibe to this song, it isn't as energized as most of the girls' songs from this album. LAST TIME LOVER This is yet another song that separates from the girls' usual hype girl power sounds. This is your casual love song, but all of its verses are sung by Melanie B., where she sings in a low, sexy voice that can make any go crazy, if you know what I mean. MAMA The fifth and final single from the album. For starters, this is a beautiful ballad, with the beautiful sound of a choir. Secondly, this was a song the girls had written for their mothers and it was a great gesture to show how much they love and appreciate their mothers. WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE The fourth single from the album. The girls went back into their girl power sound with this song. It is a great song all the way. SOMETHING KINDA FUNNY I used to be nuts about this song, but I think I played it out for myself. NAKED The girls decided to get a little raunchy by recording this song that sounds to me like they are talking about sex, intimacy, love, romance, and... being naked. IF U CAN'T DANCE Although this is great dance song, I never really understood the meaning of it. By the time this album was released, the Spice Girls were already famous in their own country, which would be England, and here in the US. This album helped push them further into their fame and the album remains a favorite amongst all of their fans.
Free Music Review: Still searching for the clues and secrets Hit: 5 Stars
My life was meaningless. I had no friends. My D&D character died after a seven year run, and I still lived in the basement of my stepmoms house. All that changed with the release of SPICE. My quest for the answer has kept me busy now for over 10 years. The secret is in the album, and my Holy Grail is Baby Spice.
Never have I seen such a beautiful woman. She is the object of all my desires. The perfect female specimen can be wrapped up in just two words 'Baby Spice'. When I first heard the song 'Naked' I was taken to a dream world. I listen to this album 14 times a day, everyday. And when I hear the song 'Naked', I become naked and always have the same vision, kneeling behind Baby Spice and using her pig-tails like the handlebars of a motorcycyle.
Now for the album. I only share this with you because I have come to a point in my research where a partner is mandatory. I did not want to bring an outsider in, but for the love of Baby, I must. I must have Baby Spice all to myself, and I promise a great reward for anyone that can help me. If you can assist me in my quest, I promise you fame, power, and glory. All I seek is Baby Spice, the rest of the world is yours.
SPICE is an acrynom, it stands for "Supernatural Place In Central Europe". I first discovered this after listening to 'If you can't dance' backwards. After more listens, I realized that SPice World is a real place and the peretual Baby Spice needs to be rescued. After wrapping my face in tin foil, sitting on a carrot, and listening to 'Love Thing', the vision was revealed to me as seen through a pink cloud. Baby is trapped in a tower in Prussia, as if that was not bad enough, a three headed dragon guards her.
I went to Wal-Mart and purchased a plastic sword that glows in the dark. The voices told me I would need it. 'Who do you think you are' confirmed my belief that I was the knight to rescue Baby. Only the man that rescues her can fulfill the prophecy of '2 become 1'
My quest is temporary on hold. I must find the 'yan uber gorrsay'. I discovered this after listening to 'Mama' from :23 to :27 of the song and then playing the last 14 seconds of 'Last Time Lover'. It was then I discovered that I must enter the 'Spice-rit World' never to return. I must bypass the gates of the Spirit World and locate the afterlife that contains all Spice. It is there that I find the Path of Spicage. I will follow it to the Spice Sea where the keeper will sail me to the Island of Spices. But for a ride on his boat I want answer the riddle "What do you really really want?" When I anwer the 'The love of Baby', my journy will continue.
But to enter the Spice-rit World, I must find a person with Spice of heart and Spice of mind. He or she must split my skull with one blow with a hatchet, separating my left and right brain. Immediately after doing this, he or she must shove the CD directly into my split brain and then tape my head back together with duct tape.
I ask all who are reading this listen to "Some Kind of Funny". Write down every tenth word and also include the 14th, 27th, and 56th word. When you have all the words written down, take the middle word and write down the last letter of the word. If that letter is also the first letter of your first name, then continue.
With your list, take the first letter of the first word and write it down. On the next word, write dwn the 3rd letter. Alternate between 1st and 3rd letters of the words until you reach the end, but beware on the 6th, 9th, and 13th word, you must use the fourth letter. When all the letters are written down, arrange the letters so that it spells your name EXACTLY!!! First, middle, and last. If you can make out your exact name with no letters left over, you are the one I seek. Please contact me.
I am serious, this world has nothing for me. I must rescue Baby to find my true happiness. She has been so lonely for so long, she needs her warrior to rescue her. It is my destiny to be with Baby Spice in a world where it is always 1997.
Free Music Review: Iconic And Totally Unforgettable Album Hit: 5 Stars
1996 was the year in music mostly remembered for the Spice Girls, they assaulted the charts quicker than any other artist before them. In one year the had sold millions of singles, countless #1 chart appearances and had taken the world by storm. Spice still remains their biggest album to date and to many their best, but they were more than just a debut album, they were real people. They basically crusaded for femininity, you could call them to some extreme extent 90's sufferagettes.
While the weren't political, women flourished under them with that saying 'girl-power!'. The Spice Girls were magical and mesmerising. This album clearly shows why.
Wannabe burst onto the top of the charts in over 20 countries worldwide and cemented their over-night success. Wannabe is an amazing song, the hook is so memorable and just plain silly but it works and obviously sold the song well. While not their best song it is a classic 90's dance anthem.
Say You'll Be There is another of their bigest hits and best songs. It has a little country flair with a superb harmonica in the background. The video is also memorable. The girls really unite on this track. It is great.
It isn't all fun and games on Spice however, it does have some superb adult-contemporary ballads thrown in there for good measure. 2 Become 1 is one of the most notable and successfull. This ballad is so beautiful, the strings are just so lush and serene. The chorus is the best on the album.
Love Thing is a groovy little number. It actually rivals the singles off this album!! The chorus is so catchy, I like the bass line also. I also like the pre-chorus with Mel.B & Geri (I think!!).
Last Time Lover starts off with a hip-hop(ish) drum beat, it is really quite classy and sexy. Mel.B's voice sounds really erotic, the chorus sounds a little ho-ish but is really good. Sounds like a club hit. It could have been another potential singer.
Mama is a beautiful pop-ballad that just strikes my heart everytime I listen to it. I love every aspect of this song. It really is quite empowering. It sounds as if it is recorded live.
The guitars really drive the song and I enjoy the synths in the background.
Disco driven hit Who Do You Think You Are? sounds like it is taken straight from an 80's dancefloor. I used to love this song, back in the day!! Another single and hit.
Lean back and listen to the sophistication of Something Kinda Funny wash over you. It sounds really intimate and sensual. Their voices are so creamy and velvety in this song.
Naked demands attention! I like the programming and the nearly spoken-word vocals. The Spice Girls are really mature on this album. This is the most sexually extrovertal song on the album. Ironic??!!. I remember the chorus so well.
If You Can't Dance is a great last track. It is a ragga/reggae track that works really well. It shows off Mel.B as the centrepiece of the group. I enjoy the beats and the noises in the background and the harmony in the chorus.
Overall, Spice is an icon of the 90's. This isn't an album to me, this is an object of history. It is so marvellous. All the tracks never drop below heavenly ecstasy. Buy this album it really is worth the money, whatever the price.
