Free Music Review: They're gonna rock you tonight
Hit: 5 Stars

They transcended their hippie-ish song origins to become the loudest, strangest metal band in Britain: Spinal Tap, the slightly insane band of Rob Reiner's mockumentary/rockumentary "This is Spinal Tap." And not mentioning their songs is like neglecting to say that the beach has water. Included are the goopy hippie anthem "(Listen To the) Flower People," the hilarious buttock anthem "Big Bottom" (so much for "Bootylicious"), the abortive semi-mystical "Stonehenge," the delicious "Gimme Some Money," and a bunch of others from the movie.

Technically, you don't have to have seen "This is Spinal Tap" to be amused by the songs, but knowing their context makes them about five times funnier. (Try to listen to "Stonehenge" without seeing that tiny replica being lowered to the stage, or hear "Rock 'N' Roll Creation" without seeing Derek trapped in his pod) If I didn't know better, I would actually think that Spinal Tap was a real band. (For your information, that is not a black cover -- it's a close-up of the black glove. Okay?)

This album brims over with the good-natured "retarded sexuality and bad poetry" that people love. The lyrics range from almost normal to insanely bad. They rhyme "Monday" with "Bun-day" (from "Big Bottom"), to give one example. The good songs are pretty good, and the bad songs are so terrible they're brilliant. They includes such Shakespearean gems as "Getting out my pitch fork/And poking your hay" ("Sex Farm"), "Where the dew drops cry and the cats meow" ("Stonehenge"), and "You know what I want/You know what I need/Or maybe you don't" ("Gimme Some Money"). What's really amazing: They rate above the bands they parody, both in singing and musical quality.

Highly recommended, and not just for fans of the modern classic mockumentary. So crank your amps up to eleven and listen to Britain's loudest band. And ignore those dwarfs dancing around the tiny Stonehenge, okay?

Free Music Review: Great "pseudo-rock" album
Hit: 5 Stars

This has to be one of the top 10 albums of the 1980's and the Spinal Tap guys weren't even trying. They created some silly songs, but many of them sound better than the rock songs they wanted to satirize. "Gimme Some Money" and "Listen to the Flower People" easily could have been hits back in the 1960's. Likewise, "Hell Hole" and "Big Bottom" and "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight" are classic "80's" rock tunes. How many crappy glam-hair-crap bands coming out of L.A. ever topped this Spinal Tap album? Answer: Few. Guns N' Roses and Def Leppard did. Some others too, perhaps. I'm surprised none of these songs made it into heavy rotation on radio or MTV. I'm not sure how many compies this album has sold. I don't think it has been certified gold in America, which is 500,000 units sold. But regardless, this album should have sold several million copies. It is perhaps the best soundtrack (or really up there) of the last 20 years. Most soundtracks contain 1 or 2 good songs. "Saturday Night Fever" had a ton of good songs, but few soundtracks can claim to have as many quality songs as this Spinal Tap album. What's amazing is that this pseudo-rock band actually toured together in the early 1990's. Amazing. They actually outlasted the bands they were/are parodying. That's hilarious. Who would attract more concertgoers Spinal Tap, L.A. Guns, Autograph, Quiet Riot or Twisted Sister? Tap wins hands down. Of course, those bands never got to make a "documentary" that was released as a feature length film. I can imagine that the real life antics of people in most rock bands is even more hilarious than what Tap put on the screen. Axl Rose actually makes people sign non-disclosure agreements if they are invited to visit him at his secluded home in Malibu! Now, that's funny. All and all, great album. Also, buy the newly released Tap DVD. It's great. It has tons of special features including over 1 hour of never-before-seen-footage. Get into Tap!

Free Music Review: England's Loudest Band
Hit: 5 Stars

Finally, here is a collection of sone of the greatest hits of one of Englands Loudest Bands, Spinal Tap. This is overall a great collection. It has 2 pre-tap songs, when David and Nigel were in the Thamesmen, and Spinal Tap's first, and only, international number one hit, Listen to (the flower people). It also has some of the fan favorites like "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You" from the classic Intrevenous De Milo album, and "Rock N Roll Creation" from my personal favorite tap album A Rock and Roll Creation (known to others as The Gospel According to Spinal Tap). Although many may disagree with me, they may be right, because I am a sucker for concept albums. Some of the other fan favoites are on here, like "Big Bottom" from their phenominal Brainhammer album, and "Sex Farm" from their rather disappointing Shark Sandwich album. ALthough the music is good, it seems that Tap was trying to recreated the magic they had during the Intrevenous De Milo period, and they didn't succeed. Despite some great songs on this album, there are some disappointments. There are no songs from their famous Blood to Let album. It may be because a young taphead was found dead while listening to this albums, and initial accusations were that they album made him commit suicide. However, authorities did and autopsy and found out the cause of death was boredom. It would also be nice to see the 19 minute live version of "Short N Easy" from their Silent but Deadly live album. There are also some old classics missing like "We Are All Flower People" "To Fly" "I Am Flight" "Get Me Away From the Ground" "The Incredible Flight of Icarus P. Anybody" and "All the Way Home". As well as the recent composition by Nigel entitled "Lick My Lovepump". Although this collection is missing some great songs which will never see the light of day since Megaphone has refused to release any of their albums due to "Lack of Talent", there are some great gems here, and this is a great introduction to Spinal Tap to any new Taphead.

Free Music Review: A Painless Spinal Tap
Hit: 5 Stars

Ever since I saw Spinal Tap in 1981 as a youth living in Harlem, I have loved this band. Their vision and voice characterize Rock-n-Roll more so than any other band since The Yardbirds. This album, known as "Smell the Glove" to most TapHeads, shows that the band has found & broke their second wind and recovered from the days of their mediocre albums of the late 1970s (including their disastrous contribution to the Willie Nelson relief album).

"This Is Spinal Tap" is a terrific introduction to the group for new listeners. Its guitar-featuring songs show the sheer power possessed in Neigel, David and Derrick's fingers."Big Bottom," although never achieving the mainstream success originally predicted by the critics, does give some insight into the struggles of lead singer David St. Hubbins' love for others. Rock anthems "Hell Hole" and "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You," speaks a clear, raspy voice for some of today's confused older youth. One of the album's highlights is "Stonehenge," using a unique mixture of synth., drums and the harpsichord to deliver a message that reaches the heavens.

One of the interesting characteristics of this album is that Spinal Tap elected to include a few songs from past albums. "Listen to the Flower People" (a song first performed in America on the Mike Douglas show) and "Give Me Some Money" reappear. ("Money" has appeared on two other Tap albums before and was covered by Bob Dylan in the 1967 Miami Folk/Polka Festival.)

New fans of Spinal Tap will love this album for its tones, lyrics and production quality. Old Spinal Tap fans will be thrilled to hear the re-emergence of one of Rock's greatest bands. Long live Tap!

Free Music Review: I hope that last guy was joking!
Hit: 5 Stars

Please tell me that last review is a joke! If it's not then someone get that guy off of this site.

This is the soundtrack to the film "This is Spinal Tap". Spinal Tap is a fictional band that was made up for this movie. The guys in Spinal Tap are comedians/actors who are playing characters. David St Hubbins is Michael McKean probably best known from "Laverne & Shirley". Nigel Tufnel is Christopher Guest who was on Saturday Night Live in the early 80s and is best known as the 6-Fingered Man in "The Princess Bride. He is also married to Jamie Lee Curtis. Derek Smalls is Harry Shearer who was also on Saturday Night Live with Guest. He is definately most famous for his voice work on "The Simpsons" where he plays Mr. Burns, Mr. Smithers, Principal Skinner, Ned Flanders to name a few.

Spinal Tap is a fictional band but McKean, Guest & Shearer are also musicians and wrote all the songs and performed them. So they are a fake band but they are also really a band, even though that's kind of confusing. Bottom line is that these guys really played these songs and then acted them out in the film.

Watch the film because it has to be one of the most ingenious comedies ever made. Rob Reiner (Meathead from "All in the Family") directed and ACTED in the film and there is not really a guy named Marty DeBergi. Buy the soundtrack and hear some of the funniest songs ever that just so happen be much better than most of the crap that came out in the 80s.
