Free Music Notes for This Is Spinal TapFree Music Review: Hilarious but also good... Hit: 5 Stars
When I first heard about Spinal Tap, I saw a photo and actually recognized Michael McKean (lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist David St. Hubbins) from his role in "Short Circuit 2" (guilty pleasure there). So, I immediately understood that Spinal Tap was a parody of the heavy metal genre. And yet, somehow the legitimacy of the band is not in question when taking into account that McKean, Christopher Guest (lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel), and Harry Shearer (bassist Derek Smalls) actually wrote and performed these songs. Adding to the parody is the fact that these songs, while intentionally campy and funny, are actually as good as anything released by the bands they made fun of. The elements of Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and any other metal band of that time are all exaggerated to create something that is humorous, yet not devoid of musical talent. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that "Big Bottom," "Hell Hole," and "Stonehenge" are probably as praiseworthy as Judas Preist's "You Got Another Thing Comin'" or Iron Maiden's "Number of the Beast." While not as evil (though the spoken druid section of "Stonehenge" is kinda creepy), it's just as loud and it rocks just as hard. If you're a fan of heavy metal, this album just might satisfy you to the point of hilarity. Give it a try. It's funny, but it rocks!
Free Music Review: Funny and Fun Hit: 5 Stars
I love the movie "This Is Spinal Tap", and what made it so enjoyable were the hilarious yet catchy rock songs that decorate its soundtrack. These songs were meant to parody the heavy metal songs of the early 80's, but surprisingly often surpass their "legitimate" counterparts both lyrically and instrumentally. Such "hits" as "Sex Farm" and "Big Bottom" are full of sex euphemisms set to heavy beats and dueling guitars. "Tonight I'm Gonna' Rock You Tonight", "Rock 'N Roll Creation", and "Stonehenge" are all fun, catchy songs. Also featured are "Cups and Cakes", "Gimme Some Money", and "Flower People", which are an anthology to the many different musical genres Spinal Tap has explored through the years. The listener's enjoyment of this album will undoubtedly be enhanced if they have actually seen and enjoyed the movie. Just picture poor Derek trapped inside the giant pod while trying to play the bass when listening to "Creation" and try not to smile!
Free Music Review: The movie was "sort of OK" but the music CD is awesome. Hit: 5 Stars
***added July 25*** I just watched the movie a second time--it was much better this time around. Once you become more familiar with the music and watch the movie again, you notice more of the subtle humor which completely flew by my head the first time. I recommend both the music CD and the movie!*** original post july 18 *** A musical parody that can pass itself as a legitimate heavy metal band. If you were to make a heavy metal fan with no idea who Spinal Tap is watch the movie, he would believe it was a real band. Just look at the interviews that bands such as Metallica, Ozzy, Motley Crue and Skid Row would make on MTV in the 1980's. While I found the movie to be not as good as I thought it was going to be, I was blown away by the music. I immediately recognized the musical references to my metal heroes from my teens: Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. My favorite song: "Rock and Roll Creation" by far!
Free Music Review: ROF'n L! Hit: 5 Stars
Even if you don't like Heavy Metal, (or maybe I should say, expecially if you don't like Heavy Metal!) this CD is full of not-to-miss music! Three brilliant comedians/musicians, plus one director, have made a masterpiece of Heavy Metal parody that is something more than catchy! Give this a listen, and marvel at how these songs are probably better that the prototypes they mock. And what's more, they don't stop at the 'heavy' stuff; they can also do British Invastion (GIVE ME SOME MONEY) and Flower Power music (LISTEN TO THE FLOWER PEOPLE) with panache! No 'Stone' is unturned, as the songs go, either, you will find every possible Heavy Metal cliche touched on in this delightful collection of songs.I have a smile on my face from the first note to the last, and I guarantee one for you, as well!
Free Music Review: A parody that hits too close to home Hit: 5 Stars
Like others have said before me, the songs on here are too good to be parodies. I think about the music I listened to in the 70's and there just isn't that much difference between that music and Spinal Tap. Not that it was limited to that decade; listen to the Cult's "Fire Woman" or "Love Removal Machine" and compare it to Spinal Tap - not a lot of difference. If you grew up on Black Sabbath and BOC and have a sense of humor then this is for you. This recording has the pre-Tap Thamesmen song "Gimme Some Money". If you want to hear the pre-Thamesmen Originals song "All the Way Home" (sung acapella in the movie) look on the "Break Like the Wind" recording. Pair this one up with the Rutles' CD for two parodies that almost trump their targets.
