Records like this are why I love the 60's so much. This is one of those albums that covers all the bases and does it well. On the surface, it would seem to be a disc of well crafted pop/rock, with vocal harmonies along the lines of the Mamas and the Papas and the Sunshine Company. However, as you make your way through the songs one by one, you begin to notice the music getting heavier. In places, this album flat out jams! Some of the songs on the second half of the record are quite progressive. The vocals and the choruses tend to keep that 60's pop feel, but the verses and instrumental breaks push their way into other realms.
Spirits & Worm was recorded in 1969 by the talented Carlos Hernandez-Lead Guitar (also chief composer), Alfred Scotti-Rhythm Guitar and Vocals, Tommy Parris-Bass Guitar and Vocals, Artie Hicks, Jr.-Drums, and Adrianne Maurici-Lead Vocals. All are very talented musicians and leave no doubt in my mind that anyone fortunate enough to have caught this band live got a real treat. Adrianne has a beautiful voice that, while perfectly suited to pop and ballads, easily merges into rock. Personally, I find little similarity with Grace Slick.
Someone should get this back into print with some well researched liner notes. This album is far too good to remain an unknown obscurity, and I want to know why this band didn't go on to a bright future as one of America's best progressive rock bands. Yet another brilliant example that creativatity seemed to be peaking from '68 to '72. I know there is plenty of good music before and after, but that five year period was off the scales, man!
