Free Music Review: Spock's Beard - Nick Takes Over

Shortly after the release of the band's previous album "Snow" Neal Morse announced that he was leaving the band to pursue a solo career of Christian progressive rock. Since Morse had always been the band's principle songwriter, lead vocalist, and main creative force, it left the rest of the band in a bit of a lurch. Instead of throwing up their hands in defeat the remaining band members rallied together. Drummer Nick D'virgillio moved from behind the drum kit into the lead singer's role. The band took a collaborative approach to their songwriting, and "Feel Euphoria" was rushed to release faster than anyone thought possible. This album polarized many Spock's Beard fans. For some, the band without Neal Morse was no longer Spock's Beard. Others were willing to give this new version a chance. For me the album is a mixed bag but it has grown on me over the years. Nick fits in fantastically as the new vocalist and it could be argued that he has a better, more versatile voice than Morse ever did. Instrumentally the guys are all as solid as ever. The songwriting is not as consistent, but not bad either. The band flirt with progressive metal in spots which I have no problem with, but turned off some fans. There are several highlights and for me my favorite song on the album is the lone track written by bassist Dave Meros called "The Ghosts Of Autumn" The song is a ballad and there is just something about it that I have connected with since the first time I heard it. "East Of Eden West Of Memphis" is another good one that could be about Neal Morse (even though the band denies it). "The Bottom Line" "Onomatopoeia", and "Feel Euphoria" are all good too. The big epic on the album "A Guy Named Sid" is where things fall apart a bit. For me it does not really hold up against the band's past epics and seems to be a bit pieced together. Yes, there are some fine moments here and there, but as a whole it is not quite there for me. Overall I like this album and rate it 4 stars, but it is not at the same level as the band's best and is certainly different from the Morse era disc. I think that each Nick led album has gotten better as the band seems to have found their footing somewhat, but this one was a good try at overcoming a difficult situation.
