Free Music Notes for Ga Ga Ga Ga GaFree Music Review: One Of The Best Of 2007 (Without A Doubt) Hit: 5 Stars
OK, so I've never seen Spoon at SXSW, and I don't religiously checkout Pitchfork, and I didn't own "Kill The Moonlight" or "Gimme Fiction" beforehand, and I haven't met Britt Daniel, and yes, I might've kinda thought they were maybe from the UK when I saw them on Saturday Night Live last October, so I'm clearly not qualified to be in the "I Knew Spoon Before You Did" indie-snot club. Nevertheless, I venture to say that this album is--without a doubt--one of the best of 2007.
Of course when I say "Best Of" I'm referring to that wide-open genre of music that you hear everywhere but is somehow still labeled "indie".
"Wow", you say to yourself.
Ironically, I wasn't really into "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" when I first heard it on KCRW in early summer. (Yes, you heard me, I said KCRW. Surely that gets me some indie cool collateral, right?). Even after Spoon was on SNL, I was still lukewarm about it (They performed "The Underdog" & "You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb.)
And then I heard "Don't You Evah" on the way to work, and have been hooked ever since. Funny how some music takes awhile to sink in. The good stuff anyway.
So now--putting all my cool cards on the table--I own "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga", "Gimme Fiction" & "Kill The Moonlight" both digitally and on vinyl (yes they still make it) and--as a side note--the vinyl LP of "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" comes with a coupon for a free digital download of the full album from Merge Records. Best of both worlds.

Spoon-Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga *****
Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga was easily tied for album of the year in 2007 with Radioheads In Rainbows. Not only was this Spoons first album to get popular recognition, but it is also their best. While they may have hinted at greatness before, it wasn't until the release of Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, that the masses saw what some of us had known for a long while. Bridging the gap between indie, post-punk, and pop all at the same time Spoon have created a style almost all their own, and Ga is their best example of this.
The only other group that I can even stretch to compare to Spoon is The Fratelis, and as I said that is a stretch, a real big one. Their songs are cheerful, even if the message is gloomy, as in 'The Underdog' the albums lead single and possible strongest track. 'The Ghost Of You Lingers' boarders on brilliant while 'My Little Japanese Cigarette Case' contains some of the best lyrics written this side of Bob Dylan's Modern Times. 'Don't You Evah' is seriously British with a hint of soul, and a splash of funk for good measure. The song contains one killer groove as brought on by bassist Rob Pope.
Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is with out a doubt one of the strongest albums to come along in the last twenty years, and is a close runner for the best album to come out since 2000. I'm glad Spoon has finally reached the masses, I just hope the success doesn't go to their head and ruin the great music they have been making all these years.
Free Music Review: Buy this record right now! Hit: 5 Stars
Well, I did not know who these guys were. I heard about them first in Pitchfork and then in The Line of Best Fit, who both gave this album rave reviews. However, I did not read them, and did not even considered listening to this record. I don't know why. I'm usually more into brit music, so the fact that these guys are from Texas did not help at all...
However, I made a big order here at Amazon and somehow decided to buy this album. Call it leap of faith, call it destiny, call it whatever you like, but "Ga ga ga ga ga" was the most beautiful surprise this 2007 could ever have for me.
As I listened to this album, each new song gave me goosebumps and put a big smile on my face. And it is a grower!!!
The first few seconds of "The ghost of you lingers" start off with a progressive rocke-esque piano loop which makes you fear for the worse, but thankfully evolves into one of the great songs of this year.
Then there are pop gems "You got Yr. cherry bomb", "The underdog" and "Black like me".
Actually, I would have to praise every single song in this album, and the album as a whole.
Therefore, I'll make it simple: THIS IS ONE OF THE THREE BEST ALBUMS OF 2007.
Do not hesitate. Do not preview it. Do not download it. Do not hear it on the radio first. Buy this album right now, go to your house, put the record on, have a glass of whatever drink you like, and enjoy!
Free Music Review: a bit more mainstream than usual but still great... Hit: 5 Stars
Life might be full of disappointments but, quite on the contrary, through the years Spoon have proved a reliable source of enjoyment for me.
You might ask: what separates this band from thousands of other samey so-called indie bands? Lo-fi sound & look? checked. Praise from Pitchfork? Checked. Casual name-dropping by other indie acts/scenesters? Checked. Still, despite all evidence of the contrary, Spoon really manage to be one of a kind.
What makes them stand apart is what I used to call their trademark "coitus interruptus" sound, meaning infectious hooks that never really takes off and turn into a full-fledged chorus, remaining instead a hint, a tease to the ear.
This was especially apparent on one of their previous LPs, "Kill the moonlight", also a favourite of mine (not to say, the album through which I convinced most of my friends that this was truly a great band).
Beware, it is true that this album makes a few concessions to the classic song structure, thus slightly deviating from the aforementioned c.t. sound but, in the end, it's still there. Melodies that all sudden swerve to a different direction, riffs that instead of exploding into the boombastic apex you'd expext, implode or morph into something else.
I love this band and I think that this album will easily prove to be one of my favourite of the year (along with Blitzen Trapper's 'Wild Mountain Nation', for those interested).
Free Music Review: More legal (and healthy!) crack from Spoon... Hit: 5 Stars
I can't get enough of this band....every single album I've been able to get my ears on is just money. Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is no exception, and has been in very heavy rotation lately. Hell, I even went as far as to download "Don't You Evah" as a ringtone.....first time I've taken that step, and I feel slightly ashamed about it, but damn it, it's a good song. Makes me want to snap my fingers and dance like Napoleon Dynamite. Crack will do that to you.
Britt Daniels possesses what is currently my favorite voice in rock.....surprisingly versatile, he growls, howls, falsettos, croons (wait a second...what exactly is a croon? Okay, strike that) and harmonizes whenever and however he sees fit. Speaking of which, he has a talent for seeing things fit at just the right time, whether it's a harmony or a well placed chord strum, you name it. He's got many great songs under his belt, and this album is chock full o them.
I won't bother pointing out highlights.....hell, it's only 36 minutes and 26 seconds, and it's all good. My only complaint would be that there isn't more! I understand that people's taste in music differs, but if you don't like this, then I gotta question your taste.
Oh, and if you like Spoon and/or Bright Eyes, Check out the EP, Home, Vol. 4....it's a little 4 song collaboration between Mr. Daniels and Connor Oberst, with Spoon providing the backing, and it's quite good.
