Free Music Notes for Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

Free Music Review: Rock & Awe
Hit: 5 Stars

With the release of "Gimme Fiction" in 2005, I was convinced Spoon had made their masterpiece. It was the perfect combination of previously established elements: the sketch-like song structure and wild experimentation of 2002's "Kill the Moonlight" coupled with the flat-out cathartic pop of 2001's "Girls Can Tell." The songs (penned by vocalist/guitarist Britt Daniel) were simple and direct, yet imbued with an intensity of emotion not often found in modern music (or at least not as genuinely). The record was Daniel's shining moment as a songwriter; his definitive musical statement, one I thought he'd struggle to re-create throughout the rest of his sure to be long career. I never dreamt in a million years that he'd somehow surpass it. Especially on the follow-up album.

"Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" is that culmination, a record of monumental emotional depth that also manages to genuinely rock. While listening to tracks like the Jon Brion produced "The Underdog," it's apparent that Spoon is yet again breaking new ground, opening up their sound and exploring new territory while still adhering to the tried and true "Spoon" philosophy: simple and direct song-writing that packs an emotional punch. If you're tired of the vacuous music populating today's airwaves then give "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" a spin. You won't be disappointed.

If nothing else, you can always count on Spoon to be slightly different than they used to be. Aside from momentary, dramatic reinventions such as "I Turn My Camera On" from Gimme Fiction and "The Ghost of You Lingers" off of this album, Spoon have made a career out of slowly evolving and changing their sound with each subsequent release. Last album, Gimme Fiction, was a foray into heavier material. It was dark, occasionally dangerous, and perfect. It was their finest moment as far as I'm concerned. Where Gimme Fiction was the dark side, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is the light. It starts with the title, which was chosen simply because it "amused" lead singer and mastermind Brit Daniels. Most of the tracks are standard-issue Spoon, exemplary guitar music with lyrics that cut to the heart of an issue with far fewer words than you'd think possible. But the horns on "The Underdog", Motown-soul of "You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb," and the glorious chorus of "Don't Make Me a Target" let you know first time through that there's more to this. It's a short album, scraping 36 minutes, and it rewards listening again. Despite incredible stylistic differences, this is a lot like Show Your Bones by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs; Track for track, it's not the best you'll hear all year, but as a whole, it's absolutely exceptional.

Free Music Review: Again, They Don't Disappoint
Hit: 5 Stars

(Ga X 5)offers a logical progression in Spoon's already impressive discography. If critics level any criticism at this new album, most likely it will involve damning Spoon's consistency because there aren't any geniune surprises on this album. Well, so what? I consider their ability to put out one satisfying album after another surprise enough. They've found their niche---oblique, angular, and aurally textured pop-rock---and I think they're wise to stick to it.

(Ga X 5) successfully offers a hybrid of the sounds from the last few albums (Kill the Moonlight and Gimme Fiction) and as usual you can detect the often-noted influences ranging from the Kinks to Wire to, yes, Van Morrison (give "The Underdog" a spin to hear the VM influence.) Granted, the disc is short, clocking in at just over 30 minutes, but this is also in a way a sign of the band's restraint. They know what they do well, and here they're at the zenith of their powers. Even the odder, more difficult and cubist tracks in the record's middle dintinguish themselves as worthy slow-burners after repeated listens.

In short, definitely one of their best discs. You won't be disappointed. I hope they continue making discs like this for many years to come.

Free Music Review: Simply the best rock album of 2007
Hit: 5 Stars

Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is great. This is not radio rock or pop. This album is not for people that enjoy Nickleback, Creed, or other power chord ridden ballads. It is for rock and rollers looking for the next legendary sound.

For those of your who enjoy those bands, please do not take offense, but please do pay attention to the distinct differences between Spoon and all the rest. Not only is this a well built album, but Spoon stays true to themselves.

They produce songs like "Cigarette Case" that builds a complete song with few lyrics and exceptional musicality. On the other end of the spectrum, "The Underdog" is catchy and fun, but has unique attributes which pushes this past bland pop and into complex rock.

Regardless of who you like and dislike, if you are craving true rock and roll, look no further.

Free Music Review: Exploding Indie "Cherry" Pop at its best!
Hit: 5 Stars

The mix of sax, trumpet, the way they make these instruments stand out here and there, sometimes with the more typical piano and guitar, but the guitar tends not to be emphasized so much. It's different, but Spoon makes this album work!

The Ghost of You Lingers is heavy on the pianos with a pretty repeating, fast melody, but very fluid and fun to listen to. Just makes you want to keep moving on your feet. And who can say no to a cherry bomb? The chimes and sax really get your attention on that number. The Underdog can be like you or I being the underdog liking this album in such a way that since others do not "have a fear of the underdog, they will not survive." Just a silly "diddy" about not having others not enough patience for success. They are one of my new favorite bands!
