Free Music Notes for Ga Ga Ga Ga GaFree Music Review: Spare me the 'old spoon' whiners... Hit: 5 Stars
The more I listen to this release, the more I'm convinced it's worth five stars. As for hardcore Spoon fans, while I like all the previous albums to a point, I don't think 'Girls Can Tell' is a great album, nor 'Gimme Fiction'. They have their moments but are far too up and down for me. The only song that misses the mark on 'Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga' is "Black Like Me". I wouldn't have put 'The Ghost of You Lingers' as the second track, however. Other than that, this was definitely the best album of the year. And I really find it funny that some people think it's somehow commercial compared to their earlier stuff. In fact, I find this record much less commercial than the previous three. Great recording.
Free Music Review: Showing a different side Hit: 5 Stars
I am liking this cd for the mere fact that it sounds like what I "expected." Nothing mind-blowing, like Gimmie Fiction or Series of Sneaks, but nonetheless, a solid Spoon-like sound. Safe songs that are radio-friendly (The Underdog, Don't make me a target), the few songs that are without a doubt Spoon showing us a different side of them (Eddie's Ragga, My Little Japanese Cigarette Case, etc.), and of course my least favorites, The Ghosts Of You Lingers and of course Yr Cherry Bomb, which to me sounds like it should be on a "Supremes" album.
**In my opinion, buy this album if you truly like Spoon's music, (not the OC soundtracks) and you will not be disappointed.
Free Music Review: I really like it Hit: 5 Stars
But the big question: What is on the bonus disc. This is from the comments:
Brian Bonenberger says: Bonus Disc "Get Nice"
Tracklist:
I Got Mine
Be Still My Servant
Leave Your Effects Where They're Easily Seen
I Summon You (Cool)
Mean Mad Margaret
Love Makes You Feel
You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb
Tasty Fish
Dracula's Cigarette
1975
I Can Feel It Fade Like An AM Single
Curfew Tolls
The disc is 22 minutes long and contains instrumentals, demos and alternate takes. The "Cool" version of "I Summon You" is great and makes the bonus disc worth it.
Free Music Review: 2008 Album of the Year Hit: 5 Stars
From it's blistering opening track berating George W. to the last tune, a haunting bonus track called "Deep Clean" (and one of the best songs on the album), Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga delivers the almost-hooks, clever songwriting, and rock 'n' roll 2.0 that more bands should be listening to for inspiration.
"Black Like Me" and "Finer Feelings" are probably among the best songs of the year, yet Spoon makes their genius seem almost effortless. There's no guile here. Just damn good music that will grow on you until you eventually own the entire Spoon catalog and write about Brit Daniels on your blog...
Free Music Review: one of the best records of 2007 Hit: 5 Stars
1. when someone calls an album a "grower" that means they think a listener must listen to the album more than a few times to really appreciate it. no elitism there.
2. this album does not sound like REO Speedwagon. or REO Speedealer for that matter.
3. if you are a SPOON fan, this album is more in line with "Gimme Fiction" than their previous work.
4. i have probably listened to this album fifty or sixty times since it came out a few months back and seen the band twice since then (at Schuba's and the Riviera). hard to beat.
