Free Music Review: Rocking out and adding hormones to Broadway

There's not a whole lot that I can say about Spring Awakening that hasn't already been said. It is by far the best musical to grace the face of Broadway since RENT, and is similar in many ways, but features a more melodic score and it retains the setting from the original play on which it was based. It is a booming, powerful romp through puberty in every way--the acting, the story, and of course the music.
The show takes the 1891 play and uses pop music as a way for the troubled teenage characters to unleash their unheard joys and sorrows. This works amazingly well, thanks to Sheik's lush variety of tunes and Sater's illustrative lyrics. Both are exactly like what any teenager longs to scream out at the top of their lungs; things every adolescent needs to speak out about, but thanks to the provincial setting, things that these kids must remain silent about.
This show won eight Tony awards in 2007 and deserves every single one of them. Its original score is an entire rainbow of teenagers' emotions: on display are desire ("Touch Me", "The Word Of Your Body"), angst ("The Bitch Of Living", "Don't Do Sadness", and "Whispering" to name just a few), pleasure ("My Junk", "The Guilty Ones"), and everything in between. Every song is a standout because the cast are all hugely talented and every word and note rings true to the struggles of growing up.
The original cast recording, as with most Broadway shows, is excellent but cannot quite match seeing the show live. But it does capture the beauty of the songs, and now that the original cast members are all gone and the show's Broadway run has ended, it is the best way we can remember them. Lea Michele's crisp innocence sounds so young and perfect; leading man Jonathan Groff's smart ballads are a nice balance between her and John Gallager, Jr.'s angsty punk anthems. You will probably never hear a deep, dark, natural voice quite like Lauren Pritchard's. The ensemble may not have as much to do but they are just as excellent as the four leads and they all have their shining moments of humor and vocal flair.
Now that the show is sadly over on Broadway, I would highly recommend seeing the national tour or one of the international versions to get a taste of the show live. But, as with any show, the spellbinding power of the original cast will be forever available through this album. The beautiful purity of this music, and the extremely important message of the show, can and will live on for as long as there are adolescents in this world. This is a rock musical that cannot be missed.
