Free Music Notes for Spring Awakening (2006 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: A Thoroughly Well-Deserved Grammy : A Sonic Triumph Hit: 5 Stars
A Teenage Rock Musical with Germanic Overtones. That is all you need to know about "Spring Awakening". More melodious than other `rock' operas, this one actually has some great songs. Influences range from Andrew Lloyd Webber (whose stamp is all over the opening track "Mama who bore me") to Elton John, Eric Clapton, and even Sarah Brightman. Amazingly, it actually works. There is also an underlying sentiment that evokes Barbra Streisand's "Yentl", and the classic "Fiddler on the Roof".
Yes, there is a storyline, and yes the raging hormones and teen angst are all evident in full force. What I especially enjoyed about this, is that every song could have been a single. Seriously, there is so much musical worth in this album - each song is unique and different, and it avoids the muzak-esque tendencies that most Broadway musicals these days seem to be afflicted with.
Theres a reason this won the Grammy for best Musical, and its about time you discovered it. If you liked this, I would also highly recommend the new cast recording of "Xanadu" - finally we have two musicals that are worth buying and playing on repeat. Trust me, these are well worth your money. Five solid stars.
Free Music Review: I love the music on this cast recording Hit: 5 Stars
This is a cast recording of a musical about teenage sexuality. This is also a musical about what can happen when parents do not communicate with their children. It is a sad show with a serious tone, but the music is great. Duncan Sheik did an excellent job composing these songs. There are so many strong performances here. Lea Michelle has a beautiful singing voice on track "Mama Who Bore Me" She plays the female lead Wendela. Lea Michelle is also superb on the track "Whispering" My other favorite track is "The Bitch Of Living" John Gallagher Jr. is so good singing lead vocals with the cast. This rock song really pumps me up. "I Believe is a such a pretty track, and so is the track Song Of The Purple Summer" These songs are so optimistic and hopeful. I really liked it. Lauren Pitchard shines in her role as IIse. She is a victim of child abuse. She sings the very moving song "The Dark I Know" This song is very powerful and it is one of my favorites on this recording. Jonathan Groff performs the track "The Mirror Blue Night" beautifully. This is a great song about the passage of time. I enjoyed every track on this recording, and I hope to see the show someday.
Free Music Review: A truly unique musical Hit: 5 Stars
I was lucky enough to see this musical the last night of previews, 12/9/06. I've seen about 25 professional productions on the West End and Broadway over the past couple of years, and I have to say this easily makes my top 5, and probably my top 3. The show is moving, the actors are passionate, and it left me invigorated as very few musicals are able to do. To discuss the recording specifically, I would say that although some numbers definitely come off better live, it is still an excellent recording worth the buy. All of the mellow songs, such as Mama Who Bore Me, Left Behind, Those You've Known, and Song of Purple Summer, are sung beautifully. There is something about seeing Bitch of Living, And Then There Were None, and I Don't Do Sadness that can't quite be replicated on the CD; indeed, my initial thought was how relatively calm these songs sounded. Oh well, I suppose that is all the more reason to see the show again and again. In the meantime, the recording is certainly not bad, just pales in comparison to the actual experience.
Go see the show! It is not something that comes along every year and deserves a very long run.
Free Music Review: Not Ground Breaking but surely ground shaking! Hit: 5 Stars
I LLoovvee Spring Awakening (Even thought I wanted Grey Gardens to Win Best Musical at the Tony's)
Now I have heard a lot about how S.A. is an amazing and ground breaking experience and how it's going to change the face of musical theatre FOREVER!!! Well I'm sorry to say that it isn't going to change a thing.. Now don't get me wrong S.A. is a wonderful show with a superb score, great book, wonderful cast, and genius directing and choreography But it's basically an alternative rock concert with some dialouge looped through it which in this context isn't a bad thing at all. the only problem is that all you get on the cd is the superb score which again isn't really a problem the standout songs include
1. Mamma Who Bore Me
2. Mamma Who Bore Me (Reprise)
4. The B*tch of Living
5. My Junk
9. And Then There Were None
12. Don't Do Sadness
13. Blue Wind
16. Totally F*ucked
20. The Song of Purple Summer
IF you wanna rock out to a new age/ alternative/ Rock score that isn't from the 70's then pick this one up.
Free Music Review: I wish I could see it in person, but the CD will have to do... Hit: 5 Stars
I have several friends in NYC (very lucky ones, at that) who have seen this show live. They all come back with the same reviews. This show is unlike anything on Broadway today, and one of the best shows in donkey's years. The energy, the brilliant cast, the songs themselves, the arrangements, the sets, costumes, lighting, everything comes together to form an incredibly powerful and moving work of art.
I've only heard the CD, read every interview, seen all the TV spots online, and explored every inch of the official web site. That will have to tide me over until they decide to FILM THIS SHOW and RELEASE IT ON DVD! ^ . ^
Duncan's music has been a part of my life ever since his first album, and I've never looked back. This next evolution in his artistic growth is MORE than welcome! Thank you Duncan, Steven, and EVERYONE involved in this amazing show for bringing it to the world. Hopefully, it will never be the same again.
