Free Music Notes for Spring Awakening (2006 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: A must see, must hear for parents and teens together Hit: 5 Stars
As the parent of a teenager I was a little nervous when someone suggested seeing Spring Awakening on our trip to Broadway this year. I researched the show up front so I knew what to expect and did prep my teenager as well. We thoroughly enjoyed the show, it's messages and the music. It's been a couple of weeks since we've seen it and we are still humming the tunes! I've seen a lot of theater over the years and this is one of the most unique productions I have ever experienced. The music is fantastic, played by a talented and unique band. If you haven't seen the show you might misunderstand what is on the CD. Don't let the language turn you off- this musical is out to make a point and it does! I recommend the musical and the CD, although with parental supervision for anyone younger than 16 years old. I would not recommend this for anyone younger than 13 or 14 years old.
Free Music Review: Age Hit: 5 Stars
To say I can't stop listening to this CD is a bit of an understatement. It follows me. Everywhere. I can't get it out of my head. If you don't care for this, I would recommend a different CD. If that makes you happy, go for it. That being said, it is . . . big kids music . . . for the uniformed, we're not dealing with Mary Poppins (however brilliant that show may be) here. And it's not just the language I'm talk about. Though b*tch and f*ck do seem to be all the characters favorite words. But that aside, there's some rough stuff--sexuality involving quite young kids, suicide, etc.--that are very much in the music. Some Broadway shows I might say: "The show's dirty, but the songs out of context are okay"--not the case. Again, I love it, I do, but it is definitely something to be well looked into before buying for anyone under fifteen.
Free Music Review: Great, addictive, poignant, everything it should be. Hit: 5 Stars
I have unfortunately not seen the show, but I've been addicted to the soundtrack for a while now. I recently rediscovered it after forgetting about it for a while (like ya do) and it's even more clear to me know how great the songwriting and storytelling in this musical really are. The music fully captures the emotion of the show, and it shines through in the soundtrack even if you haven't seen it live. Songs like and "Touch Me" and "The Guilty Ones" leave you floored, and great tracks like "The Bitch of Living" and "My Junk" are fun and upbeat while still able to express all the confusion and hormone-induced craziness that the characters are going through.
This is awesome stuff. Taking into account its modernity and subject, it completely deserves comparison to the greats. No question.
Free Music Review: I was blown away. Hit: 5 Stars
Saw this show back in early March without ever hearing the music or being too familiar with the story. I have to say it is the best show I have ever seen on B'way! It was even better than Grey Gardens which I had seen earlier that day. The music is tremendous. I am a hughe fan of Duncan Sheik and he does not disappoint here. The actors are incredible and their voices really carry the material. Jonathon Groff and Lea Michele are talented leads, but my favorite was Jon Gallagher who really owned his songs. My favorite song has to be Don't Do Sadness/Blue Wind followed by Touch Me and Guilty Ones. Everyone loves Bitch of Living, which is a great tune, but pails when compared to the entire score. If you have not seen this show, then do so immediately. I cannot wait to see it again.
Free Music Review: Show music for people who don't like show music? Hit: 5 Stars
That's a rather obnoxious title for this review, given that I hate it when reviewers describe a show's music that way (let is be known that I *love* show music!) but that's really one of the best way to describe SPRING AWAKENING's music. You really do hear Duncan Sheik's voice in the music. The lyrics are very poetic--they don't exactly propel the plot forward, but more often than not it's merely the cast members expressing themselves emotionally. I have seen this show twice (once off, once on Broadway) and really feel like this show (more than others) needs to be seen to truly appreciate the music. Upon first listen, most will think it sounds like RENT, but seeing it live will erase any comparison to RENT you might wish to make! Buy it! Better yet, see it (if you can!)
