Free Music Notes for Spring Awakening (2006 Original Broadway Cast)

Free Music Review: Can't stop listening to it!
Hit: 5 Stars

It is an amazing musical first of all. Got to see it in New York in July. Very thought provoking and honest. All the songs are beautiful, seemingly simple and elegant but also complex, imbued with a wide spectrum of emotion. I highly recommend this CD.

Free Music Review: The music without the show: just okay 90s alt rock
Hit: 3 Stars

I like to listen to the music of a musical before going to see it live. It helps to enrich the experience, I think, of getting into the show itself. I suppose in this case, the Spring Awakening cast recording helped temper my expectations as well. Duncan Sheik's music is distinctive for being non-distinctive alternative radio filler, and by itself doesn't really make for a great calling card for a show that is otherwise dynamic and passionate. Removed from the experience of seeing the exceptional cast do their thing on stage, the music is one-note--or maybe two-note: either navel-gazing ballads or pop-punk rockers--and left on its own merits, a lifeless snoozer. The Tony was deserved, a Grammy would not be.

Free Music Review: LOVED Spring Awakening!
Hit: 4 Stars

I had not heard of Spring Awakening until I saw it win 8 awards at the Tony's so we decided to see it when we went to NYC a few weeks ago. I'm so glad I bought the CD before we saw the play. It helped bring the the story together and my son and I have listened to the soundtrack over and over since. Some of the melodies are just gorgeous and the words so poignant. Even if you don't see the play, give the CD a listen!

Free Music Review: Amazing show and CD
Hit: 5 Stars

I saw this show in New York just last week, and completely fell in love with it, so much so that I bought the CD right then and there. What an amazing show, so sad, so funny, so brilliant, with an extremely talented young cast that are full of energy. Whenever I listen to it, I long to go back to see it again. It is one of the most exciting musicals I've ever seen, and I hope to have the chance to see it again sometime.

Free Music Review: Most beautiful music
Hit: 4 Stars

A review based on the CD as a stand-alone:

The music is beautiful. The plot is sad. For me, the theme of sexual angst gets a little old after a while. (We GET it already!) But my teenage musician/thespians LOVE this CD, as I suppose it speaks to them a little more currently than to my 47-year-old self. But I do remember the energy and frustration and passion of those days. This musical speaks a great deal of truth.

I'm very impressed with Duncan Sheik (music) and Steven Sater (lyrics)--especially Duncan Sheik. Very beautiful music.
