Following in the footsteps of such Broadway Rock Classics such as Jesus Christ Superstar, & Rent comes Spring Awakenings. Having hear the music on this CD I went to see this incredible coming of age musical in New York. Set in 1890 Germany, Spring Awakenings is based on a play written in this same period. It is remarkable that a 1890 playwrite would have been so ahead of his time to write a story about the supression human sexuality in teens and the harm it can do. The Original Cast recording is one after another passionate, funny and heartfelt songs. There is not one bad track on the album.Free Music Review: A New Voice for the American Musical Theatre

Spring Awakening is a wonderful example of where American Musical Theatre should be. This Broadway show is fresh, origninal and true. Performances on the Original Cast Recording are excellent and flawless. The only issue I have with this Original Cast Recording is that the producers - given the complex subject matter- should have included a summary of the story line in the notes. I also don't quite understand why there is a "parental warning" label on this CD - I found no material on this CD objectionable. What a fantastic recording of this amazing musical. I saw this production just before it went to Broadway - and it was worth the trip to New York. The entire cast is so talented, each one better than the next. Musically, Duncan Sheik did a beautiful job. Whether you get to see this show or not, you will love this recording. 'Mama Who Bore Me' is haunting, 'The B**** Of Living' will have you dancing, 'I Believe' will make you hum along and 'The Song of Purple Summer' will leave you wanting more! This new musical by Duncan Sheik is pretty damn amazing! The singers are backed up by a minimal orchestra of violins, guitars and a few other instruments. This helps you really get a grasp on the emotional vocals that these young teens are producing. Spring Awakening is a fresh, new musical that takes an outlook on the pains of growing up and the pressure that one is put through when going through puberty. I love this musical and being a musical theatre student i feel that it is essiental for every musical theatre lover! This is one of those unique musicals CDs that checks both the boxes of being an excellent encapsulation of the stage production and a fantastic standalone album for pure appeciation of the songs.
Almost all of the tracks are incredibly catchy or at least have a hook that will mean you'll be happy to listen to the album from start to finish everytime without just picking out the tracks you like best.
That being said, 'Touch Me' just won't leave my head.
If you call yourself any kind of musicals afficianado, buy this album. You won't regret it!
