Free Music Notes for 14 Shades of Grey (with Limited Edition Bonus DVD)Free Music Review: Absolutely Amazing Hit: 5 Stars
Staind are easy to dump into the Linkin Park esque nu metal category. And, sure enough after first listening to 14 Shades Of Grey, I was quick to associate them with the former, and dumped the cd deep into my pile of "rejection"; and that was that. Approximately a year later a friend of mine whose tastes I follow, advised me to listen to Shades of Grey once more. I was reluctant, but I thought, surely, that another listen wouldn't hurt. I popped in the cd, turned the volume up, and something truly magical happened. I instantly fell in love, and for the past four months, have not been able to take this brilliant piece of work out. To make clear why I consider this cd so truly, amazingly powerful, I will do a song by song analysis. 1)Price To Play-One of the only songs on the cd that is instantly accessible. Loud and catchy, the driving guitar riffs immedietly draw you in. Not as deep and meaningful in context as some of the other songs, it holds its own as a pulsating anthem that is a blast to sing along to.10/10 2) How About You-Not one of my favorites; it succeeds, however thanks to its deliriously catchy chorus.7/10 3)So Far Away-A stunner of a song. Absolutely beautiful song;everything, the lyrics, the vocals combine to create a potently emotional listening experience. It takes a while to grow on you, but once it does, boy oh boy, its simply amazing! 9.5/10 4)Yesterday- Very good song. The opening line-(You don't know what you've put me through, that's ok, I've forgiven you; but in some way, I hope it f*cks with you) is something I so completely relate to~!The chorus is driving, and the transition from verse to chorus is stunningly effective. 7/10 5)Fray-This song is not one of the best on the album, but that in no sense is to say that I dislike this song; on the contrary, I much enjoy listening to it; I just feel that it lacks the sharp emotional impact of the other numbers. 6.5/10 6)Zoe Jane-At first, I found that I couldnt' listen to this song. Not that I didn't find it a good song, it was simply too emotional to bear. But, again, I was influenced by a friend of mine, who claimed this to be the most beautiful song he'd ever heard in his life. So, after giving a few more listens, I became hooked. It is simply one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life. Aaron Lewis sings with such emotion, and the lyrics are so moving; the song is dedicated to his daughter. And the music itself is wrenchingly beautiful. 10/10 all the way. 7)Fill Me Up-Really, Really like this song. The best part of the song is by far the chorus; so intense and instantly attention grabbing. 9/10 8)Layne- Dedicated to Layne Staley, late member of Alice In Chains. Not one of the best songs on the record, but one that I like because of its simplicity. 7/10 9)Falling Down- Dig the funky beginning with the catchy guitar riffs. The song itself is filled with roaring vocals, and guitar. Not the best song on the album, but definately a solid listen. 7/10 10)Reality-One of the best songs on the album; the verses have a soothing quality about them, and even though the chorus is heavier in contrast with the verses, there is still a mysteriously mellow quality to the song.A great listen for when you're in an introspective mood. 8/10 11)Tonight-The chorus takes my breath away. Aaron Lewis's strong and passionate delivery and the stunning music and production come together for an inexplicable emotional effect.Heavy and intense, this song pulls no punches, and leaves you gasping for air. 8.5/10 12)Could It Be-This song is so contradicting. It starts out sounding like it's going to be some emo rocker, but it completely runs off course, and becomes one of the most intense songs on the entire record. Aaron Lewis is so emotional on this song. The chorus is complete with intensely catchy riffs that totally draw you in. 7.5/10 13)Blow Away-An absolutely amazing song that takes a while to pull you in; but once it does, you're completely mesmerized by its sheer power and beauty. I completely relate to Aaron Lewis's passionately rendered lyrics! LOVE,LOVE,LOVE this song. The BEST song on this album! I give it 100/10 14)Intro- This song is slightly different from the others; it's more mellow, and takes a longer time to start out. It's rich in instrumentation, and Aaron's vocals are powerfully passionate, as usual. The chorus is slow, but hard and intense. 7/10 All in all, this is an excellent album. It's such a rarity these days to find a cd thats good all the way through; but that can be said by a mile and more for 14 Shades Of Grey. Staind are truly talented songwriters with a genuine knack for strong melodies, and Lewis is a truly dedicated artist; a passionate singer with a roaring voice, and an eloquent lyricist. This cd stands on its own as a potent example of rich singing and songwriting-you can dump Staind in with the tripe you hear on TRL. But in reality, Staind are true artists with their own distinctive style, and in no way share a bond with the manufactured garbage you hear today. Whatever your tastes in music, I think that Staind can appeal to all; just because it's genuinely great music that comes from awe-inspiringly talented individuals.
