Free Music Notes for Break the CycleFree Music Review: Staind's Best! Hit: 5 Stars
This is imo, Staind's best album to date. It has the hard heavy songs that made us fall in love with this band, and it has the beautiful melodic guitars and drums that compliment Aaron's voice perfectly. Here's a track by track review, and you choose whether or not to buy the album, but I say it's definitely worth it.
1. Open Your Eyes - (****) A great opener, Staind hit the nail on the head with this one. This album wouldn't be as great without this nice heavyish song to open it up.
2. Pressure - (*****) I luv this song, one of my favorite and also one of the heaviest on the album. Aaron shows great emotion throughout this track.
3. Fade - (****) The second single of the album, and a great choice to release after "It's Been Awhile." It's heavy, yet melodic, Aaron shows emotion, and gracefully sings this song in perfect pitch.
4. It's Been Awhile - (****) The album's first single, and the song that made me fall in love with this band. Great emotion throughout, and nice guitars to compliment the man's voice.
5. Change - (***1/2) I didn't like this song much the first time I heard it, but It eventually grew on me the more I listened. It's not one of the better tracks on the album, but I also never skip it, so that should probably tell you something.
6. Can't Believe - (****) Awesome, purely awesome. This is probably the heaviest track on the album, Aaron's screams throughout this song which gives oyu a feeling of angst or anger. And sure makes you want to bang your head and sing along.
7. Epiphany - (****1/2) The first acoustic track on the album. I luv this track, and i'm sure any other true Staind fan luvs it too. Pure emotion througout as Aaron belts out the lyrics and makes you just want to sing along, definitely one of the better track on the album. Definitely do not skip, give it a chance.
8. Suffer - (*****) One of my absolute favorite tracks on this album, it definitely makes you belt out the lyrics along w/ Aaron, and makes you turn up the volume. It's hard and hits you heavy, will definitely get up off your feet and want to pound on somebody.
9. Safe Place - (****1/2) I luv this song, the emotion just pours out of Aaron when he's singing this. Just listen, hard to explain.
10. For You - (*****) The third single off of the album, and definitely my favorite single they released off this album. I luv this song, people seem to not like singles cuz they're released to mass media for all the teeny-bopper MTVers to listen to. But I don't care, I still luv this song. It's hard hitting, and you get gripped in to what he's saying, and the lyrics catch you and don't let you go.
11. Outside - (****) I like this song, but it got old, it's been out since '99 when Fred & Aaron performed it together at FV '99, and got a great response. And since then i've heard it a million times, even b4 BTC was released in '01. But it's still a great tune.
12. Waste - (*****) The BEST track on this album imo. I luv'd this song the first time I heard it, but I didn't start to connect w/ it until I found out what it's actually about. Once I found out, I listened to the lyrics, and almost cried literally. It's a sad yet heavy song, definitely my fav. on this album.
13. Take It - (****1/2) A great closing track, not really a closing track if you got an early version lol. It's emotional, and....damn, another one that's hard to explain, just listen, you'll definitely get trapped.
Bonus Track 1 - On mine I got "It's Been Awhile" (live) and defintely better than the over played track that others got. I got my copy the day after the album was released, so I got the Live version of IBA, and i'm glad I did.
Bonus Track 2 - I guess current copies have the live version of "Outside." And that's the one w/ Fred Durst, and it's been OVERplayed, and definitely pretty annoying, but hey if you like it, that's cool.
Well get this album, it's definitely worth every penny, and you will not be dissapointed, I know I wasn't, lol. I've seen Staind live twice, the first time at FV '01 after BTC was released, and the second time in '03 after 14SOG was released. Definitely see this band live when you get the chance. They'll be releasing another album this summer titled "Chapter V," So pick it up when it's released, and a tour should soon follow. Pick up their 3 other albums "Dysfunction," "14 Shades Of Grey," and finally "Tormented." Althought "Tormented" isn't available in stores, you have to order it online, but believe me when I say, It's definitely worth it. But for now check out BTC you won't regret it. Peace out.
Break the Cycle PosterAussie edition of the alternative metal act's 2001 album. 14 tracks including one exclusive live bonus track, 'Outside' by vocalist Aaron Lewis & Limp Bixkit's Fred Durst. Watch out, mom and dad. If you don't treat your kids right, they're gonna up and start an alt-metal band to share the angst you've brought on them with the world. After all, who needs therapy when you've got a million kids hearing your pain on MTV? Staind has never been a band to gloss over personal issues. They've given their albums names like Torment and Dysfunction, and their lyrics delve deep into singer Aaron Lewis' difficult past. Contrary to the title, Staind's third release, Break the Cycle, sticks with the tormented cycle, covering the same themes of heartbreak, self-doubt, and broken homes. Lewis has almost three decades of personal material to mine, and as familiar as his issues are, Break the Cycle still feels like a new, honest look into difficulties that can hit people across the board. "Waste," a song written to a fan who committed suicide, is particularly poignant as it grabbles with Lewis's empathy and anger for a boy he's never met. "Outside" is another album standout. It's a slower, partially acoustic number that builds on its own emotion. The songs on Break the Cycle are drenched in melancholy melodies and slow, heavy riffs typical of the sensitive side of the alt-rock genre. Lewis sometimes breaks out into either a hearty yell or a throaty gurgle that sounds like the devil vomiting ("Can't Believe"), but the best songs keep his passion a little more controlled. You've probably heard rock like Break the Cycle piping from mainstream radio stations already, but Lewis's ability to turn his breakdowns into his art should capture a new round of fans happy to find kindred spirits in the band. --Jennifer Maerz
