Free Music Review: A step...Not Forward...Nor Backward...Let's Just Say A Step..

Aaron Lewis and Co. have struck again with their fifth studio release entitled "Chapter V" cleverly titled or not we'll leave it at that. I have always enjoyed Staind's music but never been a full on fan. It was about in mid-July when i was reading new album releases and saw this and it for some reason caught my eye and never escaped my attention. I for some reason wanted to pursue Staind as a new favorite. So, I purchased 14 Shades Of Grey, Break The Cycle, and Dysfunction while awaiting this release. I must say those 3 prior mentions were far from dissapointing, all being great in their own way. So it was only natural to get this and await my own reactions. At first i wasn't sure what to think but then it all changed, and this is ranked up there with any other Staind album. Just as good, if not better at some points.
1.Run Away 8/10...A decent song, but far from a good opener. I thought this being the opening track would be a bit heavier, but no less a pretty good song.
2.Right Here 9/10...Another chapter (no pun intended) in the Staind book of semi-ballads, and this one ranks up there with the likes of It's Been Awhile. I love this song, the only part that holds it back from being perfect is the somewhat boring chorus, but great bassline and a great song.
3.Paper Jesus 8.5/10...A nice breath of fresh air. Some of Staind's heaviest since Break The Cycle. The opening riff in this song is about as heavy as this band, or alot of bands for that matter, can get. The verses are great, the chorus good, very good song.
4.Schizophrenic Conversations 9/10...Another slower song, but man do these guys know how to do them. I love the chorus in this song so much, one of my favorites.
5.Falling 9/10...Staind's newest hit, and pretty easily understood. Another heavier song, with great lyrics, and the chorus features "falling is easy, it's getting back up that becomes the problem." I love the riff in this one and it's a great overall song.
6.Cross To Bear 8/10...One of my least favorites, kind of an unusual beginning, and the chorus is very different sounding, it's hard to explain, like Aaron's vocals are farther back, but eh it's ok.
7.Devil 10/10...A slower song following two heavier ones, and this one takes the cake. Probably my favorite Staind song overall, just amazing the way Aaron sings "and i swear i'm not the devil" over and over again. If i had to find a flaw in it, it would be the repetition of the chorus, but that doesn't bother me too much.
8.Please 9/10...An angrier piece, lyrically. The chorus is wonderful, and this is another one of my favorites.
9.Everything Changes 9/10...A very heartwarming song. The way the acoustic guitar blends with Aaron's vocals get me every time, just a great song.
10.Take This 7.5/10...Wasn't a huge fan of this song from the beginning, probably the least played out of the whole cd. Just kind of boring to me.
11.King Of All Excuses 8.5/10...Wow. The beginning sounds like you're listening to a pantera record, the riff mike lays down here is pheonominal, while the rest of the song follows suit and is pretty good. The lyrics themselves are great and make you think..."you've lied so much you think it's true"
12.Reply 8/10...Eh. Kind of a weaker way to end it, but not too bad, definitely should've ended it with something very soft, or very heavy, this falls in the middle and is kind of lost in the shuffle.
All in all, a great effort on this one, and it's an enjoyable listen every time. Might very well be my favorite Staind album, i do recommend for fans of Staind or hard rock in general.

Chapter V marks the return of one of the biggest-selling rock groups in America today. Recorded at Allaire Studios in Shokan, NY and at the band's Springfield, MA rehearsal space, the CD was produced and mixed by David Bottrill (Peter Gabriel, Mudvayne, Godsmack). Staind is back in a huge way!Platinum sales. Palatial homes. Fred Durst's cell-phone number. Is nothing enough to lift the heavy air of angst that hangs over Staind? "I've mastered feeling nothing/ I'm dead inside/ Why don't I care?" sings frontman and walking existential crisis Aaron Lewis by way of response on "Run Away," the opening track of the group's fifth album. And so the mood is set--again. The rest of the band offers its agreement through brooding torrents of noise and dense minor-key melodies, maintaining its allegiance to 1990s metal heroes Alice In Chains and Pantera. With the exception of the tantalizingly melodic "Devil" and tender love song "Everything Changes," the acoustic guitars have largely been set aside on Chapter V, leaving Staind to pummel away at its troubles and hoping that people still have time to listen to self-pitying grown men moan about their dysfunctional childhoods.
