Free Music Review: Exceptional piece of work!
Hit: 5 Stars

Where to begin? In early September of 2001, I first noticed Staind on MTV (which is a channel I don't really like) in their video for the song "Fade" from Break The Cycle". I didn't like because I thought it was a group that didn't seem to be very interesting. Finding that Fred Durst had directed the video didn't help. So I really hated them for a while. A few months later I noticed a live version of "Fade" and instantly fell in love with it. Arron Lewis's vocals were very well done and it seemed heavier then the video. So I decided to here Dysfunction first.

When I got it, I was mesmerized. I never knew that Arron Lewis had been through such a [messed] up childhood (The song
"Me" told me everything). When I heard SPLEEN, That was when Staind became a favorite to me. It had amazingly heavy riffs mixed in with Arron Lewis doing something with what some people call the "vomit scream" with his vocals. Amazing! But it had then dawned on me that they had changed on Break The Cycle. My substitute teacher who liked heavy metal (Metallica, Pantera, Sepultura, Slayer) told me that the song Mudshovel was heavy amd original, but that on Break The Cycle that they had turned into Pu**ies because they started doing acoustic stuff about girlfriends ("It's Been Awhile" he was refering to. I agree. However, Break The Cycle happened to have hardcore stuff on it like Open Your Eyes (which I really think deserves a lot more credit than it seems to get from reviews) or Pressure. The music here goes from soft and emotional (Me) to screamingly heavy (Raw, Speen). Mike Mushok is a great guitarist that can sound almost as heavy as Korn's two guitarists, Head and Munky. Korn seems to be an influence to this band, but lets not get into that. Johnny April plays creepy bass lines to make the music much more intense. Jon Winsoki is a pretty good drummer, nothing too special. Now here's a rundown of the tracks rated from 1 to 5 stars:

Sufficate- Great opener with slow, heavy riffs. Lyrics are nothing to good but tolorable. It does get old though. 4/5

Just Go- This is the underrated first single. Really didn't get them too noticed. Great lyrics. Has of country music thrown in with a killer ending. 5/5

Me- Soft song which talks about Arron's meloncholy family life. Very emotional with a well sung chorus. Not as good as the other songs though. 3.5/5

Raw- Incredibly heavy and speedy guitars make this one a kick ass ride to take. Makes very good use of the vomit scream. 6/5

Mudshovel- I'm sure that you all know this smash hit! You should know that it was originally on the so-called "extremely rare" Tormented (I'll get into that later with the truth about the album) 6/5

Home- Pretty good. Good chorus. But the lyrics don't make sense at some points. But who cares? More personal song. 4.5/5

A Flat- Excellent! Goes back to the roots of Tormented. heavy guitar with a creepy bass intro. 5/5

Crawl- Fast! Fast! Fast! Guitar can almost never be better! Good bridge too! 6/5

Spleen- Best song on the album. Probably Staind's heaviest work. I believe it's about his ex-girlfriend. 10/5. And as many of you know, Excess Baggage was the secret track. Unbelieveable acoustic ballad. 6/5. It was a secret track in my opinion to keep the 10 song album from being relesed as an EP to be forgotten instantly.

Now as for Tormented, I recently found that album. It was violent, suicidal and somehow santanic. Songs like "Tolerate", Nameless, See Thru (has nothing to do with Outside), and the end of the haunting "4 Walls" have a horrifying story of a teen who wants to be dead. It has the rather sloppy (but still potent) version of Mudshovel with screaming in it. The singing really hasn't developed during throughout and the vomit scream is nowhere to be found. However, the riffs are still excellent. The cover with naked, crucifixed barbie dolls covered in blood with a gory bible offended Fred Durst (another funny story). It's an album worth finding. And finally, for all of you who a looking in vain for Tormented, relax. They released the ... thing almost 9 months ago now. Warning: If you want to look further for it, stop reading. ... Order it ....

I should stop now because I'm coming close to 1000 words. Bottom line: Get everything by Staind. Especially this and Tormented. Thank you for taking your time to read this review. I hope I was helpful.

Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst fell in love with Staind so hard that he coproduced their major-label debut. This fact should be endorsement enough for the Massachusetts-based quartet's target audience. Although not as heavy on hip-hop influences, singer Aaron Lewis's guttural, dragged-through-the-mud vocals dig into the meaty guitar wall and thrash around the speakers like Durst's band. Dysfunction's all-you-can-eat buffet of decibels grows a bit wearisome by the end of the album, but a couple of numbers stand up and demand to be noticed. "Just Go" boasts a classically sludgy Mudhoney-like groove before settling into an uncoiling murmur à la Judas Priest. The well-executed moshpit-ready "Mudshovel" gleefully cops from Alice in Chains' psychedelic leanings. Staind's hard-rock epistles are certain to gather the band a devoted following. --Jason Josephes
