Free Music Review: STAIND RULES #1
Hit: 5 Stars

Staind by far is one of the best bands in the world and their major label debut album Dysfunction proves that. The first time I heard "Mudshovel" I was blown away by the thumping mesmorizing bass of Johnny April, the blistering guitar of Mike Mushok, the great beat drums of Jon Wysocki, and the great powerful emotional vocals of frontman Aaron Lewis. After that i went out and bought the album and i wasn't dissapointed with the 9 incredible songs on the album.Every song has its own unique sound and its like nothing you'll ever here form any band.Aaron's outstanding vocals really are the highlight of this album. His lyrics are just real emotional raw and powerful unlike any other singer out there.Johnny April is one of the greatest bassist out there today and on this album his talent is heard.Every song on the album is filled with great bass from Johnny.Mike Mushok is one the best guitarist also.Like Johnny his talents are heard throughout the album.Jon Wysocki's drums are really great and booming especially in my opionion on "A Flat" my favorie track on the album."Suffocate" is an excellent opener with heavy beats and you can really rock out to this song."Just Go" is a more mellow laid back track but just as hard hitting as the rest with really great lyrics and vocals."Me" is a more personal emotional song that is really the deepest song on the album."Raw" is just that raw lyrics and insrumental."Mudshovel" is the best bass song on the album in my opinion just the bass alone makes this a must listen to."Home" is another personal laid back track but don't let that fool you its a excellent track with rock out guitar bass drums and killer vocals."A Flat" is just a straight rock out song one of the hardest on the albums and Mike is just straight rippin this track up with his powerful and booming guitar."Crawl" really highlights Jon Wysocki's drum talents really one of the best drum songs on the album."Spleen" just rocks great vocals and Heavy guitar and bass makes this more great. The Bonus track "Excess Backage" is a real personal emotional raw song with Aaron playing the song with an aucostic guitar and singing with his one of kind voice.Overall Dsyfunction is one best albums to come out in any genre so if you're a hard rock/heavy metal fan pick this one up aand you won't be dissapointed.

Free Music Review: Powerful, emotional, original.
Hit: 5 Stars

It's tough to be a metal fan on the lookout for new things in 2001. The radio is pushing a constant barrage of Rap-metal, while decent acts that have similar sounds are pushed by the wayside. Traditional stations still plug Sabbath, AC/DC and Metallica, but there has been very little to be excited about in recent years for the metal connoiseur.

Enter Staind. Their sound is complex and compelling, led by equal parts darkly enjoyable guitar riffs and Aaron Lewis' amazing voice. Lewis can range from a haunted croon to a guttural scream in the space of a measure, and his voice complements the heavy and brooding sound his band creates. "Mudshovel" was their big radio hit, and deservedly so. It's a catchy piece of music driven by a sonorous bass groove and Lewis' relentless vocals. "Crawl" and "Raw" are favorites as well, leaning toward the heavy while simultaneously showcasing Lewis' stunning vocal range.

Lyrically, Staind is more meaningful than half the bands out there today, popular or otherwise. Many of my current favorites are lyrically inept or simplistic; Lewis is somewhat like Jonathan Davis of Korn in that he searches inside himself for the emotions that cause powerful feelings and bring those onto paper. Staind is not Shakespeare, but the emotions are there and are too honest to ignore.

Other outstanding songs are "Me", "Home" and "Just Go", but there are no bad songs on the album. Some folks might complain that at nine songs, the album is a tickle and a squirt in the current metal marketplace, but when held up against other records(like those from a certain band with the initials "L.B.", for example), the lack of filler and the strong lineup of polished and well-constructed songs is indeed refreshing. In fact, the only complaint I have about Staind is that Fred Durst discovered them and gets to claim some sort of brilliance because he helped them get their start (never mind his first act upon seeing their CD "Tormented" was to smash it to the ground and declare they would never play on the same stage as he).

Dysfunction is a mature and compelling record. I think fans of all genres of metal could get into it, particularly people who recognize the talent of bands like Tool, Korn, Static-X and Snot.

Free Music Review: Surprise Surprise
Hit: 5 Stars

Someone recommended Staind to me saying they're like KoRn. Though I like KoRn, I didn't care because I don't listen to metal all that much, but I decided to try something new, so here I am. I'm really impressed with the purchase. Staind, while owing to KoRn somewhat, are more like our (well, mine anyways) fallen Seattle heros, especially Soundgarden and Alice In Chains. For the 13-year-olds, that's a very high praise (and if you like KoRn and Staind, you'll love those two). Instead of the usual loud racket, bad attitude, talentless metal bands (that's why I rarely listen to it), Staind are very thoughtful. Some very smart lyrics, amazing musicians, topped off with a smooth flow, and you have "Dysfunction". Don't worry though, if it's hard rock you want, you've come to the right place. Mike Mushok can deliver very crunchy riffs with a sense of melody, not catchy, but it will keep the listener tuned. He's a very good guitarist and he should be one to look out for in the future. Thankfully, the rest of the band members are just as talented. Johnny April is just as good as Mike, Jon Wysocki is an amazing drummer and Aaron Lewis has a very beautiful voice, very deep like Eddie Vedder's but just as crystal clear. But what's a band without any good songs? Staind have plenty, even though you only get ten (secret song at the end), these ten songs will keep those who listen very happy. "Suffocate" is a great opener, couldn't have had a better one. "Just Go", "Mudshovel" and "Home" are the singles, I love them too. "Me" is a really beautiful song that may not find a place with metal heads because of it's slow pace, no matter, their loss. "Raw", "A Flat", "Crawl" and "Spleen" are very heavy songs, and they rock, I love them too. The secret song is an acoustic song, if you hated "Me" for it's slow pace don't bother, but it's really a touching amongst the heavy tunes. You should at least here it once. So there you go, a very solid CD that I normally wouldn't have bought but I'm glad I did. If you want something heavy, but not too heavy, I can't recommend this enough.

Free Music Review: Staind's "Dysfunction" Symbolizes Self-Expression In Metal
Hit: 5 Stars

Staind's 1999 album "Dysfunction" is not your typical CD, and Staind is not your typical band. The lyrics in the album showed me a whole new side of life, its Dark side. Its singles "Mudshovel", "Just Go", and "Home" are good examples of how life works. The singer, Aaron Lewis, sings about his life, which can be very depressing. He also tells you that he has made some mistakes in life. With the powerful lyrics, heavy guitar riffs, and creative and powerful drum beats, Staind makes this album well worth it. Now, I'm not saying this album is for everyone, many of my friends that I have talked to have said that this album is TOO heavy or TOO depressing in parts. I like to think of this album as one thing, a warning telling you this is NOT the last time you will hear about Staind.

Although this CD only has 9 listed tracks (there is a secret acoustic track about 15 minutes after the end of track 9, Spleen) all 9 tracks are very well thought out and played very well. It's clearly obvious that Staind put a lot of effort into writing this album.

Their 1st album, "Tormented", is hard and heavy, with the screaming voice of Aaron Lewis singing about this world and his life. Their new album, "Break The Cycle", has its depressing parts and its "cheerful" parts.

I thought this album was one of the most amazing albums I have ever heard in my life. This album moved me very much. I liked this album because it told me about how other people live in life, and even though I have it made, others do not, such as Aaron Lewis. This album, to me, stood out from all the other CD's I have listened to. Its a very expressing album and a very well-put together album. This album symbolizes self-expression in heavy metal. I recommend this album to anyone to feels depressed, to let them know that they are not the only ones feeling this way, and to people who enjoy quality heavy metal on an amazing album. Like I said earlier, this is NOT the last time you will hear from Staind.

Free Music Review: A great album, well-deserving of it's audience
Hit: 5 Stars

Staind is one of the few bands that you can say really deserves all they've got. They've fought hard to get to the top of where they are right now, and they really deserve the fanbase that they have going and the stardom. Although they released an independent album before this title "Tormented", (hard to find, but amazing if you can pick it up), this CD is more organized, has the band at it's best, and essentially gave the band their real break.

This is also a band that is fortunate (and smart) enough not to fall into a trend like Limp Bizkit (who ironically discovered them), KoRn, and numerous others. Their music can do anything, and just like Tool, Perfect Circle, and Deftones, they really have no boundaries on how far they can go. This entire album, while staying in a deeper, darker mood, can still teach a good lesson.

Songs such as "Mudshovel", "Home", and "Spleen" bring out some great bass-playing that you can actually hear, unlike many other bands. The guitars in "Home", "Me", "Suffocate", and "Raw" are nothing short of amazing. But that doesn't even begin to sum up where the album itself stands. None of the musicians, especially the amazing voice and lyrics of Aaron Lewis, the lead singer, ever slack off on the album. The emotion also really comes out in "Excess Baggage", the hidden song after "Spleen" (after a long wait).

If you like your music hard and deep, or enjoy musicians such as Tool, you have to do yourself a favor and buy this album. Also look for their cover of Public Enemy's "Bring The Noise", done with Fred Durst, which is on the "Take A Bite Outta Rhyme" album, as well as their live, acoustic track "Outside", on the Family Values 1999 Tour CD. Support this band to no ends, they're one of the few that really deserve it.
