Free Music Notes for Stand Still, Look PrettyFree Music Review: Love it!! Hit: 5 StarsThis CD is great! Several of the songs talk to my heart.
Free Music Review: Two talented young women score a hit Hit: 5 StarsI have long been a fan of Michelle Branch. Certainly, she shines on this album as she has in the past. Jessica Harp is equally as talented. Both are very willing to share the spotlight. I saw The Wreckers not long ago on Don Imus' program on MSNBC. Even early in the morning, playing acoustic guitars with only one accompanist on fiddle, their voices harmonized in such a way that I knew I had to get the album. I have not been disappointed. My favorite tracks are "Leave the Pieces," "Lay Me Down," and "Rain." There is a certain level of cynicism in the lyrics these girls have written and sing, but it is not off-putting. It is simply reflective of persons of their generation and age. They will grow out of it just as my generation did. Jessica is a poised performer who is confident in herself and her abilities. Michelle is clearly better known than Jessica, yet she is content to let Jessica take the lead. I'm so glad that marriage and motherhood have brought to light new qualities in Michelle's work that we hadn't seen before. At the same time, she still sings with a certain intensive "pop/rock" feel that, as a hard rocker from the late 60's and early 70's, I find very appealing. The Wreckers are a breath of fresh air in country music.
Free Music Review: Not to bad Hit: 3 StarsI wasn't overly impressed by this. Maybe becuz I was expecting more of the Michelle Branch I was used to. But I can't get enough of the first song "Leave the Pieces" Absolutely worth the buy for that song alone
Free Music Review: Sounds like so many other country-pop albums these days Hit: 3 StarsSorry. I liked Michelle Branch's first lp, though her 2nd one was unremarkable. Maybe that's why she switched up and decided to go pop-country.
There is nothing really wrong with this record, other than the fact that it sounds so much like every other female country pop record out there these days. The Dixie Chicks come to mind, and even their sound grew old after their first album.
Sorry, but this just doesn't do it for me. What I object to with all this new country pop is the production. It all sounds so slick and produced. I'd much rather hear just a tight 4 piece band using guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass fiddle and so on, in an acoustically produced vein. This pop sound has grown tiresome.
Free Music Review: excellent debut Hit: 4 StarsMichelle Branch carved out a place for herself in the young female pop singer market serveral years ago with a brilliant debut and a successful if derivitive duet with Carlos Santana. This record is her first with friend Jessica Harp. The ladies mine the borderline between the singer/songwriter and country genres for quality songs that should fit well in the americana format.
Highlights include the opening track Leave the Pieces, Way Back Home, The Good Kind, and the title track Stand Still Look Pretty. Of special note is the presence of producer/multi-instrumentalist John Leventhal on many tracks.
I recommend this record for folks who like songs that don't sound like formula country.
