Free Music Notes for Standing in the Shadows of MotownFree Music Review: NOT THE ORIGINAL SOUNDS??? Hit: 5 Stars
No s---, Sherlock. A Music Fan From New York is evidently unclear on the concept. This disc had me grinning from ear to ear, and tapping my foot involuntarily from beginning to end. What great songs these are! They make you feel better about the world just hearing them. And it wasn't the singers on the originals, great as they were, who were responsible for this feeling, it was the music, as this CD proves. These wonderful musicians never got their due until now. As the liner notes point out, these guys played on more number one hits than Elvis, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and the Beach Boys combined, yet nobody knows their names. And I'm fairly sure they were not financially compensated at a level commensurate with their talent and contribution to those records. Hopefully this disc will change all that. And damn, Joan Osborne is not too bad her own self.
Free Music Review: Two hours of heaven Hit: 5 Stars
The documentary is being played on cable this week, and for anyone who's never seen this, you are in for a treat. The musicianship is sublime--the surviving Funk Brothers backing Joan Osbourne, 'cello --both of these ladies awesome angels--Bootsy Collins, Ben Harper, Chaka Khan...I was so absorbed that I think I actually went into the tv set and became part of the film. As incredible as the performances are the stories of the musicians, their devotion to their craft and their instruments, to playing well and playing for pleasure, to using all their creativity to produce the sound.
Of course, when you learn of their being abandoned by the dude that made money off them, learn that Jamieson bought a scalped ticket to watch Motown 25 Live then died two weeks later, you are both saddened and outraged. But I'm glad this work set the story straight.
Free Music Review: Hurry for the Funk Brothers Hit: 5 Stars
Before this CD (and forthcoming movie release) I had no idea who these guys were/are--- God help us all this time around should they not be compensated and blessed with love, happiness and cash! I was thrilled to read their stories. Their original recordings touched every day of my life and made a difference. Confidently, I know this CD will have the same impact on my grandchildren. Hearing their music brings back the fondest memories of my life. Funk Brothers, you are giving us hope. This is about so much more than music. Thanks to all those who made this happen. With totally no disrespect intended, thanks to the original vocalists for not participating. Otherwise, we could all still be believing it was the vocals that made the sound so great. It was/is definitely the musicians.
Free Music Review: Amazing - simply amazing Hit: 5 Stars
Never mind the well done vocal performances of the guest singers and backing vocalists...just realize that 30 to 40 years after their initial creation, these musicians are capable of such dead-on recreation of these classics. Even when Motown sent it's acts on tours, the versions performed were nothing like the ones recorded. The Funk Brothers improved on their original works in the only way possible: they invited fans in to add to the electricity and magic. It's hard to listen to "You Keep Me Hangin' On" (original studio track) without the ghosts of the Supremes voices...until you start listen to the instruments. Hard to believe these guys did this without knowing who was going to sing over their tracks, what lyrics, etc.BUY (DO NOT DOWNLOAD...BUY!) THIS DISC.
Free Music Review: Leaves Me Breathless.... Hit: 5 Stars
Just finished seeing the movie. Unbelievable. The flood of emotions seeing this movie and hearing the music is overwhelming. If you are a musician, or a bass player, like me, this film is a religious experience. These guys ROCK.... And living in obscurity for all these years and for lack of recognition to masses, well, is a crime of the ages. It is sad that some of these unsung have passed on, not seeing this epic project come to light--and still, this movie is being promoted as a documentary and is in limited showing. This movie should be on Broadcast primetime TV and presented in grammar schools, high schools and universities to show people how love and love of music is such a powerful thing and such a powerful voice that can evoke emotion and strength. Just incredible....
