Free Music Notes for Standing in the Shadows of MotownFree Music Review: I want more... Should be 10 Stars. Hit: 5 Stars
I liked the CD so much, I bought the DVD. It is my favorite DVD in my collection. I have lost count of the times I have watched it. I would like to see another CD come out. I have always liked the songs of this era, but never knew until the movie was released that the common thread among my favorite songs was not the lyrics nor the singers... but the musicians. The musicians are tremendous. I only wish I could express how much I love their music. Yes, The Funk Brothers are greater than the Beatles and Elvis. I wish they had received the recognition they deserved earlier in their lifetime. Each time I hear a song, I think "That's Marvin Gaye and the Funk Brothers". For me the Funk Brothers will get the credit each time I listen to their songs.
Free Music Review: Ignore the reviews by the imbiciles Hit: 5 Stars
This most certainly DOES sound like the original musicians. It is playing right now and even the tambourine sounds...right. Not just like a tambourine but like THE tambourine. The guitars are as wonderfully choppy as ever and Bob Babbit does an admirable job of filling Jamerson's unfillable shoes. The only complaint about this CD is MeShell's attempts at the vocals on 2 tracks. I'm all for artistic license but she is in a totally different universe. How the band is able to stick together while she is singing in totally different tempos just goes to show how incredible they really are.It is very moving to listen to this knowing that there is finally a set of names being put to the grooves. Congratulations, Funk Brothers.
Free Music Review: Terrific cd for a terrific, uplifting film Hit: 5 Stars
I gotta say I was a little hesitant about hearing new versions of original classics that we all know and love. But after seeing the film, I raced out to buy the cd. The music is performed with so much love and soul. Literally the whole theater applauded this film at the end. Joan Osborne's rendition of "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" brought tears to some of the people. Thank God, the Funk Brothers finally got their due. Sorry to keep bringing up the film in comparison with just the cd, but the ending where they bring up photos on stage of those who have passed was extremely touching and just made you feel so uplifted that their music lives on. A great cd and a must for any Motown fan.
Free Music Review: A MUST HAVE FOR EVERY MOTOWN FAN Hit: 5 Stars
It was absolutely amazing to hear a group of musicians who, 40 years after the fact, still have that fantastic groove they had when they did the original songs. The pairing of these terrific musicians with a group of today's artists was nothing short of brilliant. The young audience of today, who may never have heard the Motown of the past, will be able to snap their fingers and tap their feet when they hear the likes of Chaka Khan, Joan Osborne, Ben Harper, Meshell Ndegeochello, Gerald Levert and other great artists of today, give their interpretation of classic Motown hits, coupled with instrumental tracks that no one has ever heard before this CD. A collector's dream at the very least!!!
Free Music Review: great musicians, great music Hit: 5 Stars
I picked up this album last week and am really enjoying it. It's easy to recognize the great talent the Funk Brothers still possess. The most poignant song is "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" - the lyrics are powerful and the musical arrangement is perfect. And Joan Osborne is a real revelation on this song - outstanding voice and emotion, the sure highlight of the album. Me'shell Ndegeocello is another highlight, as she re-recorded "You Really Got a Hold On Me" with the Funk Brothers, who most definitely demand your attention. It's really great to hear these classic songs brought back to life by the Funk Brothers with the help of today's musicians.
