Free Music Notes for Standing in the Shadows of MotownFree Music Review: I love this disk! Hit: 5 Stars
Unlike most reviewers, I didn't much care for most of what came out of Motown during its heyday. In particular, I found the vocal styles overbearing and self-indulgent.
The covers of these classic tunes are, with two exceptions, far superior to the originals in my opinion, not least because the musicianship of the Funk Brothers is a stronger part of the mix and the vocals are much more to my taste. In particular, Joan Osborne and Chaka Kahn blew me away with the raw power and emotion of their interpretations of songs whose original versions didn't do much for me.
In my mind, this is the Motown album for those who think they don't like Motown!!!
Free Music Review: It's the Music! Hit: 5 Stars
Very early in the movie, Standing in the Shadows of Motown, the assertion is made that it was the music, not the performers, that made these tunes great. I was skeptical; after all, great performers did these hits originally. Then the movie started to roll, and we heard modern versions of the numbers, performed by Joan Osborne, Gerald Levert, and others. While they're not the originals, they might well have been! These tunes stand by themselves. And therein lies the point; it WAS, it IS, the music! If you're hesitant to try this CD thinking that it cannot possibly match the original songs, set your doubts aside. You're in for a real treat!
Free Music Review: A stunning collection for any fan of soul music Hit: 5 Stars
If you don't yet have this CD and you love Motown, run and get it. It's a great companion to the film, which just opened in some cities, and an incredible education in just how the intricate, funky Motown sound was constructed. It's worth it just for the track that features James Jamerson's bassline to the Four Tops "Bernadette," then adds instruments until finally Levi Stubbs yells "Bernadette" ... but Joan Osborne's take on "What Becomes of the Broken-hearted" and "Heatwave" will be a revelation. I didn't like her until I heard her on this CD and in the movie ...
Free Music Review: A must have Biography of Motown Hit: 5 Stars
I saw this movie at a friends, and then I "had to have it in my Library" .. I think this movie is a great informative movie of the Motown, and the Funk Brothers, who were the back up band to a lot of the Motown songs .. i think that also this movie would be good for teachers, to show students, as an education in music .
The soundtrack is incredible ... especially Joan Osborne.... wow .. she really can sing these old motown songs ..
This is a Keeper for sure .... the DVD was sent fast to me from this reliable seller.... am very stoked to own the movie now .. for a great price.
Free Music Review: WE DIG THE FUNK! Hit: 5 Stars
Joan Osborne's version of What Becomes of the Broken Hearted just might move you to tears. Incredible rendition.
Have wondered all these years about the fantastic musicians behind the great Motown sound: who were they?
What were their names? Where did they come from?
Well, the excellent documentary tells you all about them and just might make you buy the CD, as I have recently done.
Grateful to all the talented folks for giving us so much great music over the years! Words are not enough!
THANK YOU, FUNK BROTHERS!!!
