Free Music Notes for Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace - Original Motion Picture SoundtrackFree Music Review: take the time to think about it
I have enjoyed the Star Wars movies and music as well as many other people. I've witnessed the pre-Phantom hype that has to be generated in order for Lucasfilm to earn money for the two movies following Episode I, with chagrin, but understanding. I have purchased the soundtrack, and thouroughly enjoyed it. I've read most of these reviews, and had to add my two cents, because there are points that people seem to miss, either due to being a fan of the original music, or an undeveloped sense of appreciating something new (go out and eat some raw fish.) It has been pointed out that themes from the earlier movies were not utilized much, and should have been. But how? Luke, Leia, Han, and even the Empire don't exist yet (at least, they don't in this film.) The themes have to be drawn from the new people/places, not rehashed from the existing scores. It has been said that this music sounds like it was trying to synchronize with the action. These people aren't paying attention-the goal of EVERY piece of Star Wars music was to resemble the movie, and in key places this means synchronizing with the action (asteroid belt, rendevue at Sullust, "NEVER" yell by Luke, realization at the Sand Crawler.) Empire Strikes Back at times sounds like a misguided Stravinsky, but after having seen the film and understanding the mood AND the action for particular pieces, the music works wonderfully. Saying that this souindtrack's music doesn't act on it's own is rather obvious. It is a SOUNDTRACK, and goes with a movie. Once we have seen the movie, and understand the action and emotion behind the music, it will mean much more. Take for instance Schindler's List. That theme would have meant very little without the heart-renching tale that went with it. Which brings me to my final point. This is something almost entirely new. You could even say that the familiar aspects of this film (Obi-Wan, Yoda, and even Anakin) are new-or rather, NEWER. So, everything on this soundtrack has to have a "new" feel to it. We have the main theme at the beginning and the end, and then the best way to enjoy the music is imagine the characters and what we know about their personalities and what they would do during the music. In the end, the music presents a very satisfying whole, and will mean that much more once we've seen the film. By the way, I don't think 20th Century Fox had much to do with this film (and I could be 100% wrong about this) so what's the point of complaining about the absense of the Fanfare? It's on countless other Star Wars discs. If you HAVE to have it, go listen to it. If you want something new and interesting, it's on the shelf waiting for you. 5 stars. Bravo, Mr. Williams.
