Free Music Review: I am matt and this is my heart. Hit: 5 Stars
Enough to bring tears of joy, to anyone, man or woman.
Free Music Review: Some very good rock-based pop that has two GREAT songs! - only for pop fans though Hit: 4 Stars
Stars is another guilty pleasure pop band - you'll either love it or hate it. They have two saving graces - female vocalist Amy Millan (who is just amazing) and two hitworthy songs ("Elevator Love Letter" and probably "Death To Death"). Millan is just extraordinary (after this album came out movie producers started giving her jobs, if that tells you anything), and even though the male vocalist pales in comparison he's not that bad. Lyrically, most of the songs are pretty easy and fun to memorize as they're relatively simple. They're also slightly deep ("Elevator Love Letter" is kind of interesting lyrically AND highly entertaining sonically). Not every song is good as it's definitely uneven, but the ones that are are usually great pop songs. "Elevator Love Letter" is the obvious stand-out, and on occasion it even conjures up some genuine emotion (yeah, I'll admit it haha). I would've given it about 3.5 stars if it weren't for the quality of its highlights. It's not for everyone, though - just pop enthusiasts. Recommended!
Highlights include:
"What Did The Snowman Learn About Love?"
"Elevator Love Letter"
"Heart"
"Death To Death"
"The Vanishing"
"Life Effect" (kind of)
Free Music Review: Acquired taste CD. Somewhat disappointing. Hit: 4 Stars
Above average with some strong weaknesses. This CD has a lot of haphazardly-written, awkward lyrics (Heart, Death to Death) that just don't work with the music-- but I suppose this is endemic, to some degree, of Stars' songs in general. Elevator Love Letter, which has excellent lyrics and develops quite well, is one of the best songs I've heard recently, and it's songs like this, "Look Up," and "Don't Be Afraid to Sing" that make the CD for me.
I was waffling between three and four stars, but I think I'm going to go with four. Some songs on this CD are almost there but aren't quite-- The Vanishing and Heart are examples. Stars' heavy emphasis on unnatural, electronic sounds seems to cloud out what would otherwise be musically pretty solid, and the lyrics that sometimes don't fit together properly seem to detract from the quality of the album.
Free Music Review: Bright, dreamy electronic synth pop Hit: 4 Stars
Stars sophomore album is a pure delight. Its dreamy synth pop hooks leisurely drift you into a daydreaming twilight. This is by far one of their best albums. I have seen them live three times and they do not disappoint, sounding just as ethereal and cathartic live as they do in the studio. Amy's smooth, sexy vocals are astounding and Torquil's wit and dramatic flair entice the mind. If you want to spend the day in relaxed and tranquil mood then Heart is the album you've been looking for. Elevator Love Letter, Romantic Comedy and Life Effect are my favourite songs.
