Free Music Notes for In Our Bedroom After the WarFree Music Review: Long time Stars fan says prepare to be surprisappointed. Hit: 4 Stars
I hope this comes out as a balanced review, but my perspective is from a long term fan. At the soul of this album, it is as great as any of their previous release. It conveys the same honest and romantic song writing from all the band members.
As in the past, they've evolved their sound in subtle ways in their production. I think a conscience decision was to make a rawer and more direct in sound and instrumentation (and dare I say, funky). Vocals and piano sound like they were recorded in a bedroom (which they were if you watch the making of movie) which is probably fitting to the title of the CD. I feel that this means part of the sparkle and polish from Heart and Set Yourself on Fire is missing and I prefer that sound.
If you're able to get the version with the bonus DVD, then this is automatically 5 stars. Not only is it insightful look into the band but they got the funniest interviewer. Just the CD is still 4 stars only just because Set Yourself on Fire is so damn good and set the bar too high. :)
Free Music Review: Potential Great Hit: 4 Stars
In Our Bedroom After the War
In Our Bedroom After the War is an excellent cd, though not as quickly "catchy" as previous albums. Multiple listens will, I suspect, make this a favorite of 2007. (Don't many great recordings share this trait of acquired taste?)
I highly recommend this cd to any Stars fan. If you're looking to purchase your first Stars cd, however, go for Hearts or Set Yourself on Fire.
Free Music Review: Great moments, collected. Hit: 4 Stars
This album shows a lot of growth from "Set Yourself On Fire". Whereas Fire was very singular in style and theme, Bedroom explodes in unexpected ways.
Free Music Review: Could have left out half the album! Hit: 3 Stars
I'm a big Stars fan and have been listening to them for years - both Heart and Set Yourself On Fire have been longtime favorites. I bought this cd a couple weeks ago before a long weekend in the mountains and was SO EXCITED by the first three tracks! I even called my sister to say how good the cd was! And then it was as if after Genova Heights they totally lost their energy.
I'm realizing that a really good producer has the ability to look at everything a band writes and says, "this song is great, this one is crap." Sometimes a band has to write 30-50 songs to put together a 12 song album. It seems like Stars wrote...well, 12 songs. Just because a group writes a song doesn't mean that it's good enough to make it onto an album; the Stars are really awesome, and really talented -- the first half of the CD is evidence of that. But whoever helped them produce the CD checked out for the second half, and the musicality of their song-writing is boring and flat; there's little for the ear to hold onto, and without strong lyrics to compel the listener (their lyrics are sometimes questionable to begin with), there isn't much substance left. I'm totally disappointed.
I will be putting the decent four or five songs onto my ipod, but the whole CD won't go into rotation the way Heart and Set Yourself On Fire have. It's a shame, too, because the Stars are so much better than this CD would lead one to believe. Maybe they'll get their act together for the next one?
Free Music Review: Falling Star Hit: 3 Stars
Definately not as catchy and addicting as Heart or Set Yourself on Fire. A slight disappointment.
