Free Music Review: Only a slight improvement from their previous album
Hit: 2 Stars

I have to say that I absolutely HATED "Set Yourself On Fire", their previous cd (my critique of it is available to read elsewhere). And I am so close to giving this new album 1 star, except that I must be honest and say that there are two good songs here. I like "The Night Starts Here" and "My Favorite Book" - and THAT'S IT. The rest of the album has more of the same "pweshuss" treacly singing from both the man and woman. I just hate how earnest, "honest", and "heartfelt" they're trying to sound. The reality is that it's false. They're trying to capture something soulful, but it only rings hollow. I feel like they're trying to deceive themselves and their audience. I for one, am not fooled. As for the dvd? Believe it or not, I actually had to see who was behind this trainwreck act. The thing I noticed is the two leads appear to be much older than I imagined, like in their late 30's. Is this a group dealing with arrested psychological development issues? The concert is boring and every song sounds the same. My eyes rolled in embarrassment several times whenever the camera was on Bernard Sumner-wannabe, Torquil Campbell. I have a serious question: were they (or are they still) formerly a Christian pop band? Because I recognize in Stars a blandness that typifies that genre. That would explain a lot. To summarize, I like a couple of songs on this album, and that is good - but this is a band I still have contempt for.

Free Music Review: Weak followup to a solid album.
Hit: 2 Stars

It's a weak album, folks. I was a fan of the previous albums and this new one just falls short. Songs #2 (The Night Starts Here) and #6 (The Ghost of Genova Heights) sounds alike in both dullness and melody. Song #2 is by far the worst song on the album and ruins it for me, because it sounds like the background song to a commercial for a cruise line. The lyrics don't help, either..."The night starts here, the night stars here..." I picture a loving older couple twirling on the cruise deck under the stars as the word "Carnival" appears at the bottom of my screen. The album as a whole is very meh, with a few songs here and there that are simply all right. They really do come off as a poor man's Arcade Fire or Morissey in this album instead of standing solidly on their own as they did in the previous albums. I'm really disappointed.
