Free Music Review: The Start To It All - And Not Really Much Like The Steely Dan We Know
Hit: 5 Stars

AT A GLANCE - The 1972 debut album from Becker & Fagen, and an outstanding collection of unforgettable songs played by a collection of excellent musicians who do justice to them all.Two hits in waiting,"Reelin' In The Years"and "Do It Again".The start of a decade or more of jazz/funk/rock albums that placed the band at the top of both commerical and critical success.Enduring songs that stand the test of time that sound as good today as then.Great value for money,10 songs in all that dont just rely on the hits for the quality of the collection, a necessary inclusion in any serious music library.5 stars

At a time when so called "independent/alternative"bands were springing up and would just as quickly disappear or develop into another indistinguishable sound, two New York/New Jersey natives, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, after paying their dues in a number of bands moved across the continent to Los Angeles, and recorded a minor classic. It would launch the band's career and stamp their individual sound into the consciousness of the listening public for a decade or more.More recently, since 2000,into the consciousness of a new audience.

This was one of the first bands that caught my attention as an adolescent, and opened my appreciation for jazz influenced music. The two were never what was considered usual or conformist, and were writing original material that was just not played at the time. When guitarist, Denny Dias advertised for" a bass guitarist and keyboard player with jazz chops" in the "Village Voice"in 1971 and Becker and Fagen answered and played their own material,Dias fired the band and joined them. This recording was not dissimilar in place, time, feel, musicianship and unfashionable sound,as Dire Straits debut"Dire Straits" in 1977,with the music public warming to the sound and launching a steller career for Knoffler and others.

This 5 star debut is also unique in that it really does not sound like the band that developed over time.It was not reliant upon the overtly jazz and funk/rock influences of "Aja" or "Pretzel Logic".Regardless of the looseness and unconventionality of the band, these songs were so good it really did not matter.

The musicians choosen to compliment the two,journey-man Jeff"Skunk" Baxter on guitar and pedal steel guitar(later of Doobie Brothers fame),Denny Dias(with his unmistakeable sitar on "Do It Again"),then New York hotshot session player,Elloitt Randall, and the drums of recruited Jim Hodder, brought together a mix that complimented every song and produced an impeccable and original sound.Elliott Randall's lead guitar on "Kings" and "Reelin' In The Years"is superb.Another standout track is "Midnight Cruiser".Out of 10 songs ,6 or 7 are standouts..not bad for a debut album!!!

The album sporned two top 10, or near top 10 hits in the US,"Do It Again" and "Reelin' In The Years" in 1972.Fagen who was nervous about fronting the band as the vocalist, turned to Baxter to recruit his friend,David Palmer to sing his blue eyed soul vocals on,"Dirty Work" and "Brookyn(Owes the Charmer Under Me)"and "Change of the Guard".The voclas suited the songs whilst Fagen fronted "Do It Again" and "Reelin' In The Years".

The recording contains 10 songs, complimentary to each other and memorable, showcased in the best possible way.An outstanding debut and the ushering in of a unique sound that launched the band upward. In this instance the fluid line up worked, giving variety and a rockyer tougher edge that did not necessarily translate to the late recordings.

And the name,"Steely Dan",was the huge steam powered hydraulic dildo in the William Burrough's book,"The Naked Lunch".The reason it was chosen? ..because it sounded like a good name for a rock band..ahh the 70s.I loved the band on this alone.5 stars, enjoy and a must to own.

Can't Buy a Thrill Poster

For a band who considered themselves "anti-rock 'n' roll," Steely Dan had a big impact on the rock world from the get-go. This platinum 1972 debut soared to #17 and produced two of their signature hits, Do It Again and Reeling in the Years . This reissue features new liner notes and digital remastering by two highly qualified individuals-Donald Fagen and Walter Becker.
Songwriters Walter Becker and Donald Fagen launched Steely Dan with a seductive, poker-faced 1972 debut as smoothly accessible in its music as it was elusive in its thematic concerns. The opening "Do It Again" snagged swift commercial success as one of the most mysterious pop hits in history, a sultry rock cha-cha that chronicled a series of harrowing catastrophes far removed from the reheated love songs and pro forma countercultural rebellion of the day. Though the core band boasted two formidable guitarists, Jeff Baxter and Denny Dias, it was the bloom of Fagen's keyboards and his reedy, smart-ass vocals that carried Thrill light years beyond modal, blues-based rock. That said, an enduring highlight remains the furious six-string fantasia of "Reelin' in the Years," spiked by Elliot Randall's downright historic solos, at once dour and giddy in its indictment of a poser, while "Dirty Work" (featuring short-lived, nominal lead singer David Palmer) offers a decidedly adult vignette of adultery. There isn't a weak track here, astonishing, considering how much growth future Dan albums would display. --Sam Sutherland
