Free Music Review: He Was 19
Hit: 4 Stars

Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers is a great self-titled set, my second by the band after "South of Stephen." These guys rock as evidenced by the sweat stains on the inner booklet photograph from a live concert. Some of the tunes are midtempo tracks like "My Sweet Charade" where a guy practices his best romantic moves, "If I don't talk, I just get shy." Kellogg has a knack for weaving a hook into a catchy melody & tying up the package with an intriguing lyric as on the light country-flavored "Blue Jean," "He was 19; I called him 'Blue Jean'; He was his parents' first accident; He had long hair, drove like a nightmare & I followed him everywhere he went." "Vegas" rocks with a vengeance, "It's like a girl without a boy." "Anthem of Our Discovery" is another of Steven's sterling songs with a vocal falsetto flutter on "She was beautiful." The set closes with the romantic slow song "Keep Me in Your Thoughts." A couple tracks like "Such a Way" & "Start the Day Early" stay with me less well. However, the bright spots on this Universal release are so good that this is an excellent disc. Enjoy!

Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers Poster

This self-titled record marks the debut of Stephen Kellogg & The Sixers on Foundations Records. It's a collection of seven brand new songs as well as re-recorded versions of four songs from the back catalogue that the band wanted "another shot at". Produced by Andy Zulla (Rod Stewart, Jessica Simpson), the album was recorded in and is energized with, a shot of Manhattan. With special guest appearances by Braddigan from Dispatch, Mike Daly from Whiskeytown, Rich Price and Rob James from the Clarks, the album is also loaded with help from the friends of the Sixers.
This Massachusetts band has assembled a firm national fan base one nightclub at a time, and for its fifth album--the first paid for by someone else--Stephen Kellogg doesn't alter the prescription that got them here: another original assortment of folk-rock anthems and modern pop jingles that are quintessentially adult radio-ready. Nodding to pacesetters Counting Crows ("Maria") and Matchbox 20 ("Anthem of Our Discovery"), Kellogg is aided by members of Dispatch and Whiskeytown and producer Andy Zulla (Rod Stewart/Jessica Simpson), who siphons energy into 11 songs, including four re-recorded from the Kellogg annals, such as the boyfriend-becomes-stalker sing-a-long "You've Changed" and the Loudon Wainwright-like strummer "See You Later, See You Soon." With a flair for penning can't-get-the-girl, cry-in-your-beer scripts--intermittently dusted with solemn turns--Kellogg's songs are ripe for his glossy, impassioned vocals. There's nothing earthshaking or groundbreaking here. Just a safe, solid and tuneful effort that sounds like the radio, and should be on it. --Scott Holter
