Free Music Review: Best album so far

I've been a Stephen Lynch fan for a few years now, because I haven't heard anyone else who can combine so many valuable qualities in a single performer: he is a talented songwriter, a remarkable vocalist -- no human being should be able to sustain a note as Lynch does on "Gay" from A Little Bit Special -- and a hilarious comedian. But what's more, and what is obvious most on this album, I think, is that Stephen Lynch pushes society's buttons. He's a social critic, and the best kind -- one that doesn't get preachy. The subjects he chooses to write about, and the sorts of things he says about them, are precisely targeted at our taboos; taboos that prevent us, normally, from revealing our inner thoughts or admitting that a newborn baby may be ugly. The way he targets these taboos with humor and exaggeration makes us question the reason for these taboos. Why can't we say that the baby is ugly? Some babies are -- and, even though the taboo is even more severe against admitting it, I would expect a new parent to be happier when given a good-looking baby, rather than an ugly one.
This is what Stephen Lynch does: he makes us think about ourselves, and laugh at ourselves, and snap our fingers and sing along as we do so. For anyone who hasn't heard Lynch before, I would recommend this album first; his humor is a little bit less toilet/gross-out on this album than the other two, and the songs are better, overall -- as has been said in other reviews, the first two albums have their weak points, but this one really doesn't. That't not to say, however, that the other albums should be avoided, or that there isn't any gross humor on this one. That's what you get with Stephen Lynch: great music, great laughs, and a little bit of nauseous self-loathing. Good stuff.
