Free Music Review: Prog, Jams and Classic Rock Reinvented
Hit: 3 Stars

As the Amazon review accurately points out, this record is heavily infused with prog rock along with jam band and classic, psychedelic Brit pop, sprinkled with some California stoner rock.

Having recently purchased "Real Emotional Trash" as my first Malkmus album, and thoroughly enjoyed it, I decided to dig back a little. "Pig Lib" isn't as polished as Real Emotional Trash, but the latter flows naturally from Pig Lib.

On "Do not feed the oyster", Malkmus delivers a nice Beatles synthesized sitar that would have fit nicely on "Tomorrow Never Knows".

"Vanessa from Queens" begins with a distinct Velvet Underground/Modern Lovers feel to it, then segues nicely into meandering guitars and ripples of sunny California jams perfect for getting baked as the kids say.

On the best tracks that follow, Malkmus continues wailing away on the wah wah pedals, at times conjuring up David Byrne "speak sing" vocal inflections. On "Animal midnight", we get another ride on 70s keyboard stylings with plenty of great jamming.

In perusing the bulletin board on Malkmus' website, it comes as little surprise to find several deadheads. Indeed, in addition to nods to the Beach Boys, "Pig Lib" has plenty of jams with distinct Grateful Dead structures.

There are some weak points on this record. They come when Malkmus loses focus, gets a little too oblique, and wallows in the type of prog rock that now sounds dated. Sorry, but some of my 70s LPs just haven't stood the test of time.

Anyway, in fairness to Mr. Malkmus, let's stop with the "when are you going to do a Pavement reunion" questions. It's time to dispense with the "Indie rock" label. Malkmus & Co. have successfully picked up where some of the great 60s and 70s bands left off, and along with Wilco, Beck, some other jam bands, not to mention the so called "freak folk" (Vetiver, Devendra Banhart, etc.) crowd, they're bringing the best of these influences to a new generation.

For those of us who grew up listening to the Grateful Dead, Deep Purple, Yes, Roxy Music, Frank Zappa, The Beatles and George Harrison, it's great to have younger musicians like Mr. Malkmus nearly seamleassly blend all these influences.

Pig Lib Poster

As an indie paragon since the early '90s, it's inevitable that Stephen Malkmus would want to make music that falls closer to traditional rock. His second solo album is the logical extension of those moments when Pavement cautiously approached the classic-rock canon, albeit from an oblique angle. Initially, it's hard-going for listeners. Where Malkmus's self-titled debut accentuated his flirtatious, pop-friendly inclinations, Pig Lib is gnarlier and more expansive. At times, it's uncharacteristically earnest, as if Malkmus was trying to defuse those usual jibes of archness with a sustained bout of jamming. Persevere, though, and Pig Lib's excellence is revealed. The two most obvious influences on spindly, febrile epics like "1% of One" and "Witch Mountain Bridge" are Television and Fairport Convention; Malkmus is particularly proficient at highlighting the affinities between New York art punk and British folk-rock through his notably improved guitar playing. Less rock-oriented souls, meanwhile, will be heartened by evidence of his continuing Ray Davies fetish on "Vanessa from Queens" and, especially, the "Waterloo Sunset"-styled "Craw Song." This is an album that, if lived with and nurtured, amply repays the kindness. --John Mulvey
His sophomore album embraces the classic rock ensemble featuring a delectable array of antecedents inform the music herein, from Irish prog-folk greats Mellow Candle to the Jazz inflected musings of Kevin Ayers and Lol Coxhill to some of the more outro moments on Pavements weirdest album, Wowee Zowee. Includes a bonus CD with 5 tracks, 'Dynamic Calories', 'Fractions & Feelings', 'Old Jerry', 'The Poet & The Witch' (live Sweden 2001) & 'Shake It Around' (live Australia 2001). Digipak. Matador. 2003.
