Way before 2003's "Wicked", Stephen Schwartz composed the score for "Pippin", the 1972 Broadway smash which earned a Best Actor Tony for Ben Vereen. Other notable players in this production include John Rubinstein, Jill Clayburgh and Irene Ryan (of "Beverly Hillbillies" fame).
Mr. Schwartz's score is filled with pleasing melodies, most notably:

Corner Of The Sky
No Time At All
I Guess I'll Miss The Man
Finale
It's no "Wicked", but still a nice score.

Early, devilishly catchy and quite charming example of Stephen Schwartz's canny ability to mix theatrical and popular music styles, let down by John Rubinstein and Jill Clayburg's mawkish and vocally nervous interpretations of the lead roles, which are shamed all the more by Ben Vereen's masterful performance and a sterling effort on the part of the supporting cast and orchestra.Free Music Review: Great Broadway, Great Music....

I went to a 2 week summer theatre camp, and one of the classes we did a dance to this and performed it for the rest of the camp and parents...I fell in love with the music from Pippin then! And if it were still on Broadway I would totally see it!Magic To Do is the best song on there, another great song is Extraordinary! :)

The sound on this CD is dramatically improved over the old transfer. And while Pippin may not be one of the great musicals of all time, it does have at least three excellent numbers, Corner of the Sky, Magic to Do and Simple Things, and Ben Vereen is a magnetic and wonderful performer. The bonus tracks by Michael Jackson doing covers of a couple of my favorite Pippin songs really clenched it. Very happy with this soundtrack.
