Free Music Notes for Pippin (A Decca Broadway Original Cast Album)

Free Music Review: Pippin cd
Hit: 4 Stars

I got what I wanted. It is a good recording of an unusual show, Ben Vereen stands out.

Free Music Review: Wonderful musical, but not a very wonderful recording
Hit: 2 Stars

I was really disappointed with this recording. Simply put, I saw the movie version and LOVED the vocal power and music power in it. William Katt could sure bust out a tune! He can still sing today, I've heard recent recordings and he is simply an awesome singer. THe other day, I found a copy of this in HMV and bought it, and brought it home, because, first of all, I LOVE Pippin, and second, I'm in a production of Pippin right now. And... I was disappointed.

BEN VEREEN: I love Ben Vereen, but not on this recording. He sounds as if he's singing a soft lullaby. Pippin is supposed to be anything but that. Simple Joys is especially disappointing too.

JOHN RUBINSTEIN: Better than Katt? Really?? REALLY?????? A soft, thin, powerless voice is better than a stronng and powerful voice??? Here, he sounds dreadful. When he sings CotS, you don't believe him.

LELAND PALMER: Not bad! She is phenomenal on this recording, Spread a Little Sunshine has gotten dozens of repeat value because of her voice!!!

IRENE RYAN: I can't listen to No Time At All without feeling sad, especially because she left us so early. She gives a touching and heartbreaking, yet still hilarious portrayal of Berthe here. She really is amazing!

ERIC BERRY: Great voice, definitely adds a more epic feel to War is a Science, and is almost very comical too!

JILL CLAYBURGH: I'm sorry but... I did not like her. Her and Rubinstein's annoying voices combined on Love Song make me want to shoot myself.

THE PLAYERS: Very creepy and intense, they especially make the Finale disturbing.

THE MUSIC: This is where the CD disappoints most. Most of the songs move at a walking pace, thus not a whole lot of energy is evident. Magic To Do is very empty and depressing because of that. Simple Joys... bo-ring! And Extraordinary... *snooze*

Overall, I hope this isn't the best recording out there. Do get the movie if you want better voices.
