Despite the fact that Steps has yet to really break here in the states, they've been huge in the UK for several years now, which is easily attested to by this greatest hits package. This is a perfect outlet for a group like Steps, whose studio records often house sterling singles but also contain alot of cheesy filler that occasionally borders on unlistenable. Among the many highlights here are covers of the Bee Gees' 'Tragedy' and a sterling reading of Kylie Minogue's finest Stock Aitken Waterman moment, 'Better The Devil You Know', both of which highlight the groups tight harmony work. Also noteworthy are the disco-drenched 'Stomp', 'After The Love Has Gone'(in which they sound most like the group they're most often compared to, Abba), and an unusual turn of restrainment on the string-laden ballad 'When I Said Goodbye'. The package is firmed up by four new tracks, among them a rote, not particularly interesting, cover of Diana Ross' 'Chain Reaction'--the other three are actually somewhat on the weak side as well, with 'Words Are Not Enough' being the best of the bunch. For those disappointed by the groups' two stateside releases, this single disc represents the only essential recording you'll need from these candy-pop unpstarts.
