Free Music Review: As good as ever...exactly ten years on!!!!!

Has it really been ten years??? wow! I had not listened to this in about a year or two before I popped it in tonight. I own it own vinyl and cd and became familiar with it on a cassette tape I played nonstop back in 1997. Ten years on this record still sounds ultra-modern. I belive this is one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Listening to it today I notice Mary's vocal contributions and boy I can't help but think I wish she were still alive (she was tragically killed while riding a bike). I am not sure I can add much to the conversation except to say that I think people who put down this album often do so because they were not able to keep up with the bands evolution and wanted Stereolab to keep playing the loud guitars. This is a softer album that requires repeated listenings but once you listen to it a few times you will love it. It gets under your skin like only the best art can....As has been pointed out its sophisticated.. at times it reminds you of the high llamas (and their rechanneling of the beachboys smile era).. at times it seems almost brazilian.. at times its very loungey....but I think ultimately its of its own place. There are keyboards that sound almost like vibes.. there are drum rhythms that sound polyrhythmic (not traditional rock beat).. its very modern....and of course it features some great vocal arrangements with Laetitia and Mary..No one gets so much out of a "LA LA LA LA LA LA" as these two...

The raw artiness and German rock influences heard on this U.K. sextet's landmark Transient Random-Noise Bursts (1993) have been distilled into a smooth sour-mash cocktail here. As with sister act The High Llamas, there's a buoyant '60s whimsy to these tracks, recorded in Chicago (with Tortoise's John McEntire), D?sseldorf and elsewhere.
