Free Music Notes for TownesFree Music Review: A stellar tribute, and also a solid album in its own right. Hit: 5 Stars
This album may be entitled TOWNES, and it may feature songs written by legendary songwriter Townes Van Zandt, but this is undoubtedly a Steve Earle record. These songs feel lived in; the recordings are intimate and familiar (thank to the largely acoustic arrangements). Even Earle's family--wife Allison Moorer and son Justin Townes Earle--make guest appearances.
The songs are, of course, spectacularly written; Van Zandt was a true songwriter in every sense of the word. Earle brings his own songwriter/producer persona to the album, crafting a record that is a warm-hearted tribute, but is also a solid entry into the Steve Earle catalog. It's hard to imagine that Earle didn't write all of these songs himself, they feel so uniquely his own. And that is perhaps the highest tribute a songwriter can pay one of his peers: take an already-legendary song, and make it sound new again. TOWNES is a country/folk album that should be listened to intently, with the lights down and a beer in your hand.
Free Music Review: Friggin' rocks Hit: 5 Stars
I'm a guitar player and listener of all types of music and this CD, "Townes", is an amazing work -- a vicarious collaboration of two amazing singer-songwriters of roots music. If you like the sound of the teasers, then I wholeheartedly recommend you buy this right now and start listening to it. I've been listening to it for three weeks straight. Townes can uniquely split a listener's head or heart with one well-aimed lyrical line. And Steve Earle -- the rural rocker extraordinaire -- has added handsomely to his body of work with this well produced and well executed cover album that feels like original material -- very fresh (raw actually) and heartfelt. Hope you enjoy it as much as me. I almost passed it up after reading the Rolling Stone wannabe reviewer... don't make the mistake. This album rocks from start to finish and never drags.
Free Music Review: master remembers mentor... Hit: 5 Stars
Steve Earle is one of our finest songwriters. He has at least three stone cold masterpieces under his belt (I Feel Alright, El Corazon and Transcendental Blues). "Townes" is a heartfelt tribute/cover of Earle's mentor/hero Townes Van Zandt. I'm too young to understand the Townes Van Zandt legacy. This goldmine collection of earnest Americana will ensure I go back and find the TVZ originals. Highlights include the well known country standard "Pancho and Lefty", the transcendent ode to wanderlust: "White Freightliner Blues", the slow blue burn of "Brand New Companion" and finally the simple but painfully beautiful "To Live is to Fly". The past miles of tried and tired experiences come thru sad and clear as Steve's haunted voice and weeping guitar pay tribute to a fallen angel.
Free Music Review: I'll Take This Over Commercial Country Anytime Hit: 5 Stars
This is an authentic and heartfelt tribute to Townes by Steve Earle. I would listen to his gravelly vocals that some of the reviewers here are complaining about on these great songs anytime before listening to the glitzy sounds of most singers on commercial country radio anyday.
Townes was authentic and so is Steve Earle. I'm listening to the last strains of 'To Live Is To Fly' on this great cd and I can't wait to hear it again.
Free Music Review: Everyone needs a little Steve Earle and Townes in their life. Hit: 5 Stars
Everyone needs a little Steve Earle and Townes in their life. They are enjoyable songs; some that make you smile, some that make you think. Album artwork rocks too!
I've enjoyed listening to Steve Earle since being introduced to his music by a friend when attending a live concert in Chicago. The concert included an alt. country band opener that was amazing too. I've also enjoyed his acting work from the Wire.
