Free Music Notes for TownesFree Music Review: Not a bad interpretation, but try these on for size... Hit: 3 Stars
This is a very nice recording by Steve, something that needs to be done to celebrate the genius of Townes Van Zandt (TVZ). To the reviewer who complained of Steve's garbled lyrics, well, you obviously haven't been listening to him for a number of years.
As good as this is, I personally feel Guy Clark and Lyle Lovett have done a better job of covering and interpreting TVZ's songs. They are scattered on a number of recordings by Guy Clark, and the Lyle Lovett release 'Step Inside this House', disc 2, celebrates not only TVZ, but another great singer/songwriter, Walter Hyatt. If you like Steve and TVZ, you'll like both Guy Clark and Lyle's 'Step Inside this House', which was one of the best releases in 1998. Enjoy, L'wood.
Free Music Review: Interesting Hit: 3 Stars
This is basically a tribute album to the great TVZ from the great Steve Earle. Most of the album is straight ahead interpretations of TVZ material. An outstanding version of "Lungs" with a Steve Earle twist is the standout for me. "Mr Mud and Mr. Gold" is interesting as a duet with Steve's son. Nice production and great instrumentation throughout, but I prefer Steve doing Steve and the many TVZ originals available. Still, a nice album, and a good intro for those unfamiliar with Earle's friend and mentor, TVZ.
Free Music Review: A bit disappointed... Hit: 3 Stars
I love Steve Earle, but found his voice too gravelly/hoarse on this album. Some arrangements of Townes' songs were not so great. One bright note: an excellent blues rendition (8th cut)is worth the entire album. Earle's voice was right for this one.
Free Music Review: Singing with a Towel in His Mouth? Hit: 2 Stars
Until Steve Earle releases "Steve Earle Sings Doyle Primm," this is the last CD of his for which I will part with any money, let alone bust-out retail. It is unlistenable and the problem is the Lead Vocalist, who sounds as though he stuffed a towel in his mouth before he laid down the vocal tracks.
If you want a great album of Townes Van Zandt songs, find a copy of Jonell Mosser's stunning 1996 release, "Around Townes." You'll play it over and over, but Earle's "Townes" will get one play only.
Earle had a certain cachet once--Rebel against Know-It-All Nashville Establishment--when he was putting out "Copperhead Road" and "Hillbilly Highway" and, back then, he didn't sound bad either. Now he affects the look of a player on the House of David baseball team and lives in New York City (hotbed of Country Music creativity!) with his 7th wife, the former Mrs. Doyle Primm (see first paragraph). The former Mrs. Primm is also known as Allison Moorer, which can't be bad duty, but it hasn't been good for Earle's diction or voice or emotional involvement with whatever he's singing.
Be careful of this record's side effect. Never mind asking your doctor-ask yourself: Would I deliberately choose ennui over whatever I could be doing with my time and money if I leave this thing in the record store?
Free Music Review: Interesting for the song selections Hit: 2 Stars
It's pretty well known that Steve Earle was in absolute awe of TVZ (with plenty of justification), so it's not too surprising that his covers here do not deviate much from the originals. Trouble is, the originals are just better, across the board. I was mostly intrigued by this CD to see which songs Earle deemed (presumably) TVZ's best ones. I had overlooked a few and went and gave them another listen. Hopefully this CD will open a lot of ears to TVZ's incredible talent.
