Free Music Review: A newer sound, but very well-written songs - great CD
Hit: 5 Stars

Since the mid '80s, Texan Steve Earle's music has ranged from hard rock to more traditional rock / mellow rock to bluegrass. Add Contemporary Folk to the list - theme here: the 'hardcore troubadour' bids 'goodbye to Guitar Town', settles in NYC's Greenwich Village and writes about the Big Apple. Pissing some traditional fans off, the tone is folky, often acoustic-solo with moderate percussion behind him (even tasteful drum machine?). Earle's songwriting is legendary, but too many people do not know him. The recording is tight, but relaxed and engaging, and with wife Allison Moorer on backing vocals, there is a lasting spirit on this CD that makes it special. It won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk/ Americana Album. GENRES: Mellow Rock, Contemporary Folk.

BUY IF YOU LIKE: Townes Van Zandt, Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp.
MUST HEAR TRACKS: "Down Here Below," "Sparkle & Shine," "Jericho Road," "Tennessee Blues."

Free Music Review: Amazing again
Hit: 5 Stars

Wow, Steve Earle recorded an amazing album. Okay, anyone who follows Steve can't be surprised by this. But the great thing is each album always has its own identity and this one is no different. The changes he has made in his life(moving to New York, Getting married to Allison Moorer) echo through the album and paint a great picture of where his life is going. From the "sequel" to Guitar Town(Tennessee Blues) to the stab at Lou Dobbs and the anit-immigrant movement (City of Immigrants), Steve as always creates songs that are very much his, but still feel new and fresh. My favorites were the already mentioned Tennessee Blues, the duet with wife Allison Moorer(Days Aren't Long Enough), and his song dedicated to Pete Seagar(Steve's Hammer) which really seems to define Steve and where he is at right now(plus how can you not like a song with a singing dog?). Fans of Steve Earle should get this, as should fans of just great songwriting.

Free Music Review: Intelligent Lyric driven Songs by Steve - Excellent
Hit: 5 Stars

** I'm pretty sure the last guy meant to give this a 5 star review!

I have only had a chance to listen to the CD once but this CD will definately get tons of repeat plays.

Steve Earle is refreshing. He speaks his mind, makes no apologies for his opinions and as always writes and sings about things that matter.

This collection of songs runs the table here from anti war songs (Steve's Hammer) to love songs (Day's Are Not Long Enough) to drug problems (Oxycotin Blues).

All in all one of his strongest efforts and with Steve's music you actually listen to the words. They matter! Refreshing in today's often throw away, meaningless pop/country songs.

Free Music Review: Washingto Square Serenade: A Wonderment
Hit: 5 Stars

And certainly Steve Earl's masterpiece. I have listened to his records for years but only on "The Revolution Starts Now" do we get a taste of the genius that made this album.

After 30 years of not great records and just OK records, suddenly Steve Earl creates a bull-goose, full tilt masterpiece. My guess is that he will never top this. Perhaps it was simply the right time, place, inspiration and musicians. The juices were flowing.

This record is a must-have for any serious pop music listener. Forget about country music or "Alt Country" it's simply a great record -like Paul Simon's first solo record. It defies category.

Free Music Review: Hillbilly New Yorker album
Hit: 5 Stars

I find this album great. Sure I'm a huge guitar town and exit 0 guy, but this record stands on it's own. Tennesse blues is a great song, although I prefer the acoustic version I got from an american songwriter compilation. I feel like steve made an album that is more personal to him, which is why i like it so much. I could listen to Steve's Hammer all day.
