Free Music Review: Washington Square Seranade
Hit: 4 Stars

A must for anyone who enjoys contemorary folk, or folk rock music. You can get the album alone, or get it with a 35 minute video. I got both, and found the album very good . Of 12 songs, 7 i rate excellent, or good. These include " living in a city of Immigrants",Tennessee Blues, Sparkle &Shine,Jericho Road, and a teriffic duet with Allison Moorer,"Days aren't long enough". The video centers on NYC Greewich Village where he now lives. He walks and talks about Dylan, the Beats of the 50"s and his music. Live performances of Tenn Blues, City of Immigrants, and the beatiful Days aren't long enough, makes the 35 minutes pass quickly. If you like folk music you won"t be disapointed in Wash Square!

Free Music Review: Enjoyable, but not the best
Hit: 4 Stars

I've been listening to Earle's work since the beginning, and his voice and lyrics have always been very consistent. He's best when he's political, he's best when he's pissed, he's best when he's thumbing his nose at the establishment.

There is some of that in Washing Square Serenade. But not enough. This is more of an album of love songs to his new home -- and can we blame him? I always feel way after a move.

Again, it's enjoyable, it's good, but, it's not his best.

Free Music Review: Country boy in the City makes Good
Hit: 4 Stars

Steve Earle has taken his made-in-the-country sound to New York and found the heart of the city on his new release Washington Square Serenade. Bringing old themes up to date and finding new ones on the streets of the Big Apple, Steve continues to please with heart-felt love songs, socially active lyrics and the sense of history that has marked his previous work. A worthy addition to the Steve Earle catalog and wonderful new growth in a truly American artist.

Free Music Review: Goodbye Tennessee--Hello NYC
Hit: 4 Stars

I heard a radio review just as Steve was leaving Nashville. He said after 20 plus years, TN was still too redneck for him--so he was leaving with his girlfriend for Greenwich Village.

Like most of Earle's songs, this CD reflects his thoughts and concerns with his own life and the world around him: "Tennessee Blues" reflects this trend:

Sunset in my mirror, pedal on the floor
Bound for New York City and I won't be back no more
Won't be back no more, boys won't see me around
Goodbye guitar town

"City of Immigrants" the somewhat overplayed single from this CD talks about his love for his new home:

Livin' in a city where the streets are paved
With good intentions and a people's faith
In the sacred promise a statue made
Livin' in a city of immigrants

Probably my favorite is "Steve's Hammer" which is a dedication to Pete. Catchy tune with a strong beat and message:

One of these nights I'm gonna sing a different tune
All night long beneath the silvery moon
When the war is over
And the union's strong
Won't sing no more angry songs
One of these nights I'm gonna sing a different tune

"Satellite Radio" is a reflection on the trends in broadcasting and one DJ's wondering whether anyone's listening to him or not.
