Free Music Review: LUKE RULES!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Luke doin' his thing. It's powerful, gritty and takes you for a great ride. If you want to listen to a true guitar GOD you must buy this album.

Free Music Review: Great for TOTO fans
Hit: 4 Stars

After finally accepting the demise of what was arguably one of the most enduring rock/pop bands in history, I decided to research Luke's solo career in search of more familiar music. Although he does sound a bit different on his own, you can tell that he had a big impact on TOTO's music and vice versa. It's no wonder the TOTO sound had become harder edged in the latter part of the band's career.

Yearning for the familiar 80's sound, I found this collection very comforting and enjoyable. I also like the fact the there are well known contributors on this album including friend and former TOTO drummer powerhouse Jeff Porcaro (RIP Jeff, you are missed).

Any early Luke and TOTO fan should enjoy this album.

Free Music Review: A very good cd, but needed more.
Hit: 4 Stars

Any Toto fan will appreciate this cd. I love the style he shows in playing the guitar. I just thought that it was a bit rough and needed to be toned down a bit. Every ballad sung by Luke is always a winner to me. This cd was no exception. I would recomend this cd to any music fan since I am a fan of Lukather. I wish he would put out more cds since the fans deserve the best and in my book, he's the best. Also, amazon did what other record stores couldn't do(which was get me this cd and at a very, very reasonable price). I will and have recommended amazon to my friends.

Free Music Review: A solid piece of work
Hit: 3 Stars

This debut full-length solo album from Steve Lukather, 1989's Lukather, is good. The material is in a straight-ahead rock musical direction. There are 11 tracks. Throughout, the songwriting is tight, the musicianship is solid, and the sound quality is pleasant. Lukather performs the gritty-tinged lead vocals on all of the songs and does a taut job with the guitar work. Numerous musicians contribute to this album--examples are Edward Van Halen, Richard Marx, Steve Stevens, Cy Curnin, Jan Hammer, Jeff Porcaro, and David Paich. The energetic opening cut "Twist the Knife" is co-written by Van Halen; also, he plays bass guitar on it. "Swear Your Love" is co-written with Marx and, additionally, he provides background vocals on it and on the pleasing "Lonely Beat of My Heart." "Fall into Velvet" is co-written by Stevens and Curnin. Stevens supplies some guitar playing--a guitar solo, for instance--for this tune, too, and Hammer furnishes a synthesizer solo and also plays a Hammond B3 organ. In addition to Lukather's guitar solo, "Fall into Velvet" sports three solos. Besides "Fall into Velvet," the rousing "Darkest Night of the Year" is co-written by Stevens. Porcaro handles the drumming on the lively compositions "Drive a Crooked Road" and the disc-closing "Steppin' on Top of Your World." Paich plays the organ on "Lonely Beat of My Heart." Even though I like all of the pieces, I consider "Swear Your Love," "Fall into Velvet," "Got My Way," and "Turns to Stone" to be my favorites. The melodious "Swear Your Love" features a catchy refrain. Clocking in at just over nine minutes, the adventurous "Fall into Velvet," which contains female backing vocals, exhibits plenty of skillful guitar work. "Got My Way" displays an enthusiastic, infectious chorus, while the pretty ballad "Turns to Stone" presents a charming-sounding guitar solo from Lukather. The CD booklet includes the song lyrics, listings of who plays what on each of the tracks, and a black-and-white photo of Lukather. The album cover illustration is cool. There are illustrations on the backcover of the CD booklet and on the back of the CD jewel case. The CD is almost 59 minutes. I recommend this piece of work.

Free Music Review: Not as many Ooh's and Aah's as Candyman
Hit: 3 Stars

First of all, I love Toto. Second, Lukather is my favourite singer/songwriter/guitarist. I bought Candyman before I got this album, and I was blown away. In Candyman, Steve covers a heap of styles and genres, and both he and his band show off remarkable chops, without it being a contest. The major difference between the two albums is that on Candyman, he had a 'band'. On Lukather, song character is sacrificed, and the number of players detracts from the eventual result. His guitar sound isn't as rich, and the grooves aren't as original. This may just be an indication of the era, though. It was the 80s, he was a guitar hero... Still, I expected more. All that out of the way, however, and there are some good moments. Fall Into Velvet is Lukather at his cruisy best, as well as featuring some great solos from Steve Stevens and Jan Hammer, not to mention Luke. As you would expect, there are also great harmonies throughout. The three stars could have been higher, had there been better songs, but I think that on occasions, there is little to distinguish them from any other guitar hero 80s tracks.

Get Candyman!
