Free Music Notes for Crystal Visions - The Very Best of Stevie Nicks (CD / DVD)Free Music Review: True "best of" package Hit: 5 Stars
When I first heard Stevie Nicks would be releasing yet another "Greatest Hits" type package, I wasn't thrilled. She released Timespace in 1991 and the Enchanted Box Set in 1998.
However this set, while not as comprehensive as Enchanted, but way more than Timespace--is the ultimate set, especially for the casual Nicks fan. Enchanted usually sells for around $40, being a 3-disc set, with this CD + DVD is going for around $20, it is a much more affordable package.
The only TRUE Fleetwood Mac track is "Silver Springs," the other Fleetwood Mac tracks are performed live by Stevie on solo tours (Rhiannon and Landslide), and "Dreams" is a Deep Dish dance remix with new vocals recorded by Stevie in 2005. It was an interesting and effective way to put a few Mac tunes on Crystal Visions. Some may wonder why not all solo work? Well most people associated Stevie Nicks with Fleetwood Mac AND her solo work. It makes the set more comprehensive.
The live tracks are masterfully recorded in perfect quality. Landslide and Edge of Seventeen sound magical with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, recorded in 2006 live. Stevie's rockin' live cover of Led Zeppelin's "Rock N Roll" is also an added gem. It has become a staple in Stevie's concert set list since the Summer of 2005, and definitely was added to appeal to Stevie's more "hardcore" fan base.
Purchase the CD/DVD set is a much more value conscious purchase than purchasing Crystal Visions as a CD only. The DVD features all of Stevie's music videos, except 1998's "If You Ever Did Believe" video, a song from the movie "Practical Magic." Viewers have the option of watching the music videos by themselves, or with added commentary by Stevie Nicks. It feels like Stevie Nicks is sitting next to you on your couch when watching the videos, from start to finish, with the voice over commentary. Instead of the same comments we've all heard before, Stevie offers tons of insight into the making of each video. Highlights of the DVD include the "Stand Back - Scarlett Version" which Stevie humorously pokes fun at herself throughout the video. She adds during the "Stop Draggin My Heart Around" video with Tom Petty that her lip singing was NOT at it's best in her first video.
The set is recommended to any Stevie Nicks fan. It also proves that Stevie has not let go of the album form. She included written background stories to each song (Except "Rooms on Fire," and I'm not sure why) in the booklet of the CD, and tons of beautiful Stevie Nicks photos.
Finally Stevie fans have a "Best Of.." set to be proud of!
Free Music Review: A fantastic collection of music, videos, commentaries and home movies. Hit: 5 Stars
I got this collection the first day of release.
The cd portion does have some familiar hits released before. However, also included is the smash hit Deepdish dance remix of "Dreams." The songs recorded with the Melbourne symphony are gorgeous: "Rhiannon," and "Edge of seventeen" have an amazingly fresh sound to them. As does "Landslide." The 3 part harmony in this song is beyond words. Gorgeous. The gem is the live version of Led Zep's "Rock and roll." It is as amazing as when I saw her cover it live in 2005.
The DVD portion is what fans have been dying to have! I owned her "I can't wait" collection" on Betamax, which covered the videos from the first three solo albums. On this dvd, it doesn't stop there: it covers all Nick's solo video clips(sans "If you ever did believe") It includes the unreleased Scarlett version of "Stand Back."!! As well as the video we all know and love. Also included are the very rarely seen videos of "Whole lotta trouble," "Sometimes it's a bitch," and "Blue Denim," And also included is the famous live version of "Edge of seventeen" live performance" taken from the famous cult video "Stevie Nicks in concert"--Which I also own on Beta!! The picture and sound quality on the dvd is amazing!!
As if this were not enough, each video clip has an option to listen to Stevie's commentaries for each video, which are great!
Also included on the DVD is a 30 minute home video from the making of Stevie's debut solo album, the 5 times platinum selling "Bella Donna."
The photos selected for the package artwork are gorgeous.
Also included is a little booklet of Stevie commenting on each song or clip, as well as rare pictures she contributed.
I paid $19.95 for this set, and it is well worth it.
Fans have been begging for her video clips to be finally released on DVD, and not only has Stevie given us that, she added a whole lot more.
In rock and roll, no artist compares to Stevie Nicks. She created her own genre.
She is arguably the top selling female rock artist of all time. Her fan base reaches multi-generational audiences.
Some may complain she hasn't released a true solo album since 2001's top selling "Trouble in Shangri La" but I think this package is an amazing gift to fans, especially considering the very reasonable list price.
Stevie Nicks is an amazing lady, artist, and very inspirational. A true rock and roll icon.
This "Crystal Visions" set is nothing short of essential.
Free Music Review: Quick-Fix Nicks Hit: 5 Stars
Mixing material from her Fleetwood Mac salad days with highlights from her successful solo career, Stevie Nicks has a nifty collection on her hands with "Crystal Visions."
Far better than past compilations like "Timespace, there are few complains to be made about "Crystal Visions." It would have been nice to see Fleetwood Mac's gorgeous Top 10 classic "Sara" included, not to mention the Top 40 gem "All the Glitter Fades." Also, the Deep Dish remix of the willowy, graceful classic rock radio gem "Dreams" from Mac's classic "Rumours" LP does not do the song justice, whereas Tracy Young jaw-droppingly brilliant remix of "Planets of the Universe" that reached #1 in the clubs in 2001 would have been a far more interesting choice than the album version. Nevertheless, at nearly 80 minutes in length, it is hard to find any real fault with this collection.
Track after track, Nicks reminds that she has set a very high standard in rock that few have rivaled. Recent live recordings of Mac classics like "Rhiannon" and "Landslide" are passionate and full of depth, and the same goes for an extended length rendition of the "Edge of Seventeen" done with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 2006. Both the live version and the original bookend the disc.
The hits sound fresh as ever, owing to Nicks' longevity. "Silver Springs" still shimmers and sparkles with melodic craftmanship and lyrical intensity, and 80's hits like "Stand Back" and "I Can't Wait" make for jubilant fun. Smash duets with Tom Petty ("Stop Draggin' My Heart Around") and Don Henley "Leather and Lace") further enhance the collection. She even does as a live take on Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll."
In addition, the CD/DVD edition is worth the extra money to the more devoted fans. An assortment of videos are including, all with intriguing commentary from the woman herself. Documentary footage from the recording sessions for her solo debut "Bella Donna" is also an engaging treat.
Free Music Review: Crystal Visions ~ Stevie Nicks Hit: 5 Stars
This is technically the second review I've ever written (the first was about Madonna). However, Stevie should have been first, since I feel she is the "total Package" ~ Her output and overall success does not equate to Madonna's, but Stevie is a star, who has written amazing songs. As a live performer, she has no peer. In her hey-day she mesmerized her audience as no other artist could, and I should know I saw her live solo and with Fleetwood Mac no less than 10 times.
Crystal Visions ~ The Very Best of Stevie Nicks is a great CD/DVD. What I like most is the DVD part, offering the video coverage of her in the recording studio with her first solo project, "Bella Donna". Stevie, unlike Madonna, is an artist who I loved both the person and the artist, and maintained interest in anything she did professionally or privately. She's just that great you can't help but want to know all about her.
There are a couple disappointments, like the absence of "Gypsy" & "Sara" (my guess is Fleetwood Mac own the rights and would not let her use them), unless she re-did them as she did with "Dreams", but too many re-mixes would become dull, and I think Stevie realized this. So she probably had a good excuse (LOL).
The other disappointment is she did not include anything never before released (just live or re-mixed versions of established songs, but nothing totally new for her fans). She made this same mistake on two previous compilations (TimeSpace and Enchanted). All her diehard fans know she has an abundance of material she could have ran into the studio and polished up (such as "Belle Fleur", one of her greatest "unfinished" works).
But, still, there are never-before-seen video things on the DVD, and anything from Stevie is something to buy and treasure, so overall I'm still a happy camper! I just wish she'd get her butt back into the studio and release another studio album!
Free Music Review: Stevie's Best and More! Hit: 5 Stars
Once again, Stevie Nicks enchants with this amazing cd/dvd set. Devoted fans will find the cd to be a re-hash of many previously released songs, however, two new songs are included, Stevie's version of Led Zepplin's "Rock And Roll," and an outstanding version of "Landslide". The three part harmonies on "Landslide" are incredibly beautiful and worth the purchase alone . . . and then there's the dvd.
The dvd contains videos spanning Stevie's career from BellaDonna's "Stop Draggin My Heart Around," to Trouble in Shangri La's "Sorcerer". Die hards will love that we finally get to see the Scarlett version of the Stand Back video. After completing this video, Stevie didn't like it and another version was shot and this second version was what aired on MTV.
The dvd includes commentaries on each of the videos explaining what the song is about, how the video was made, etc., and Stevie even pokes quite a bit of light-hearted fun at herself. At times it's laugh-out-loud funny, and it's really interesting to hear her take on things! The videos can be watched with or without the Stevies comments.
Last, but not least, the dvd includes some behind the scenes footage during the recording of Stevie's first solo album, BellaDonna. It's really cool to see Stevie, Jimmy Iovine and the girls in the studio belting it out!
This cd/dvd set deserves five stars for new and old Stevie fans alike!!!!
