Free Music Review: Could have be great. Hit: 4 Stars
I love Stevie Nicks's work, both with Fleetwood Mac and as a solo performer. I relate to every word this woman writes. She's like my psychic twin and I'm sure many of her fans feel the same. So, why am I giving this greatest hits complilation a 4 instead of a 5? Because there were some glaring omissions. How can you eliminate such stellar hits as "Gypsy", "Sara" and "Gold Dust Woman" from a 'best of' when those hits were a huge part of what contributed to her best in the first place? Also, I found too many alternate and/or live versions of her hits with of Fleetwood Mac, such as "Dreams" which is so techno/disco I could almost see the mirrorball. "Rhiannon" is a live version, which, although I do enjoy it, I would have preferred the studio version to show up here.
All this said, I do like this album. It kicks off with the studio version of "Edge of Seventeen" one of Stevie's all time chart topping solo hits and it seriously kicks butt! "Sorcerer" is magical and awesome as are "Rooms on Fire" and "Stand Back". Also included here are her two duets; "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" with Tom Petty and "Leather and Lace" with Don Henley. I was delighted that Stevie's rendition of Led Zeppelins' "Rock and Roll" was included. If you've ever seen Stevie perform this live, you'll know what I mean. This, too, is a live version and I really enjoyed it. Page/Plant and Stevie always seemed to be on the same page anyway and this was welcome inclusion. Sort of her tribute to the greatest rock band of all time.
The album concludes with a live version of "Edge of Seventeen", since this my favorite Stevie Nicks' songs, I won't complain, TOO much, but it would have been so much better if it had concluded with one of the three omitted Fleetwood Mac tunes.
Stevie sings with a heartfelt passion that is inimitable. Her songwriting skills as well as her vocal presentation never disappoint. If you cannot tolerate any alteration of studio recordings on "best of" compilations you might want to pass on this album. For myself, I do like it but wish it had been the masterpiece it could have been.
