Free Music Notes for Trouble in Shangri-La

Free Music Review: an unexpected but welcome treat
Hit: 5 Stars

I was a very big fan of Fleetwood Mac in the '70's; that was my all-time favorite "coming-of-age" band, and "Rumours" in particular was my favorite album--I nearly wore my LP out. Admittedly, however, I have listened to little of Stevie Nicks' music after that time, although I still enjoy songs from "Rumours" and other FM classics as much now as I did then. Especially I grew weary of the much-overplayed recent remake of "Landslide" and was rather skeptical when I saw "Trouble In Shangri-La" on a CD listening preview center at a local bookstore. Still, I was curious to see what Nicks might be up to now, and the album cover looked intriguing, so I put on the headphones and listened. What a genuinely great surprise! I listened to a bit of every song and liked them all so much that I had to get that album, and it's been playing in my car ever since. Now I want to go check out Stevie Nicks' other post-FM albums.

What's really wonderful is that, to me, she is as great and soulful and original a singer now as she was in the earlier days, a testimony and an inspiration that one doesn't have to be 20 to be a successful artist, or a successful anything for that matter. At whatever age she is now, Stevie Nicks is still sexy and beautiful as ever, and yet she doesn't have to, and has never had to, ride on her looks and other cheap tricks to sell her music--she is a woman with true, great talent and she doesn't compromise her gifts. More importantly, these songs are real, and what a welcome drink of fresh water. I am hopeful that my own coming-of-age daughter and others her age will appreciate them amidst the awful, inane, soulless, hollow-sex garbage passing off as music nowadays.

I am very glad I bought this new CD. What an amazing, wonderful discovery!

Free Music Review: A new voice...
Hit: 5 Stars

I haven't been able to listen to one of Stevie's albums all the way through since 1985's Rock a Little. That changed for me with Trouble In Shangri-La. Stevie seems at ease with her now gravelly voice and uses it to add character and strength to the songs. I guess before I heard Trouble I had never really gotten over the soaring, pure voice of Stevie back when Rhiannon and Dreams were the big hits on the radio. Now Stevie has taken charge of her forever altered voice & used it to her best advantage.

Favorite tracks...

LOVE IS... Probably my favorite of the bunch. Stevie sings of lost love as only she can. Changing between first, second and third person, past and present tense, the song seems to be more about the experience of love over a lifetime rather than just one love affair. Sarah McLachlan adds to the mystical quality of the song with her etherial voice. A hauntingly beautiful song.

EVERYDAY...A simple but heart felt song. Stevie's voice is beautiful on the chorus.

BOMBAY SAPPHIRES...Has a latin flavor with a prominent accoustic guitar lead. Nice upbeat song with a catchy chorus.

CANDLEBRIGHT...Stevie's voice is showcased nicely in this well produced song. Sheryl Crow harmonizes at parts to add more layers. Another song where Stevie talks about who she is--no apologies. I love the ending. You can really hear the beautiful background vocals of the ever faithful Sharon Celani and Lori Nicks.

All the tracks are great however, and I recommend sitting back, relaxing and listening to the whole album beginning to end if you have the time. I have owned this album since it was released in 2001 and have continued to listen without tiring of the songs.

Free Music Review: All hail STEVIE!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I was so pleased to learn that Stevie Nicks was, indeed, releasing another solo album. I have ALL of her solo albums as well as The Enchanted Works of Stevie Nicks, I consider myself a staunch supporter of her musical efforts.

It hurts me to read the other reviews, reviews that state that this album is not one of her best. They ridicule because of her more mature voice, and her inability to scream the high notes of her late twenties. What they must realize is that after years of drugs, cigarettes and booze, her voice has suffered; not to mention the fact that she was almost 53 when she made this album. As a person matures their voice changes, it still as beautiful today as it was in the 70's. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I don't think they are taking her life and tribulations into consideration, open your mind up more and listen closely.

The title track on this album is fabulous, still the poetic lyrics that she is known for and the music ROCKS!
"Sorcerer", "Planets of the Universe", and "Love Is" are the kind of songs that we have come to expect from Stevie, beautiful, poetic and powerful.
"Love Changes" and "I Miss You" are reminiscent of her days with Fleetwood Mac, days when she was letting her fears and changes come through in her music. When she wanted someone to know exactly how she was feeling about them.

All in all I would have to say that I was thrilled to pieces with most of the album. But to be honest I was also just tickled pink that she was releasing another album that I could stand behind and proudly add to my collection.
I love it and I think that if you love her and her music then you will love it also.

Free Music Review: Beyond Expectations!
Hit: 5 Stars

So I'm in the record store to buy Janet's new one and there on the shelf was Stevie. Needless to say after hearing both I left the store with Stevie and have listened to the infectious tracks over and over. Listening to Janet's I was dissapointed that her idea of maturity is lacing her disc with bad language. I have no problem with four letter words and use them myself but hearing them out of Ms. Jackson is like Stevie doing a cover of a Backstreet song! Stevie on the other hand is an icon of maturity and magic and this CD is true to form. Listen to it twice and see if you can't catch yourself thinking about bombay sapphires or being too far from Texas at work. How many CDs do you buy where the artist actually spent more time WRITING and nourishing the material than learning dance steps for a video? Many of the songs begin where older songs left off. There are shades of Gypsy and Gold Dust Woman among others and the story continues. I especially like the voice, writing, guitar focus and ambient noise like on Planets of the Universe. I can't think of many artists including my favorites who put so much of their own heart and emotion in their music and do it so selflessly, like they are really not doing it to pad their already rich bank accounts. When the writing is so personal you expose yourself to critisism of your lifestyle and choices as is the case in a few reviews (very few) of this album. Just as you wouldn't expect a priest to sing about marital relations you shouldn't expect Stevie to write about anything less than her own lifestyle which is obviously quite different than the average Joe, or Jane as the case may be. If I were rich I'd buy this CD for you, until then get it you won't be dissapointed

Free Music Review: Magnificent and Magical

I regularly check a Fleetwood Mac fan website which keeps up with the band members' solo efforts. Since "The Dance," I had been hearing off and on that Stevie would be crafting a new album. After four years of waiting, I had almost given up. And then 2 months ago I happened to drop by that website after having been absent from it for a while and there was a new link titled "Trouble in Shangri-La." My heart jumped at the thought of what this could behold and sure enough, the long-awaited album with Sheryl Crow (whom I also adore) was coming very soon. May 1 came and went and, on a trip to my local mall, I decided to scout for the CD. I found one copy in the entire 200+ store mall, and of course i grabbed it. The big question for me was: Was it worth the wait?

Upon hearing the title track I knew the answer was a resounding YES!!!!!! Stevie's voice and songwriting talent remain unsurpassed. This is one of very few CDs which comes anywhere close to the musical power of Fleetwood Mac's classics, but as with all things Stevie has done, it is entirely her own. I particularly enjoyed the aforementioned title track as well as the romantic "Every Day" and thouroughly enjoyed "Bombay Sapphires" (although I'm not a Macy Gray fan) and the very very catchy "Too Far From Texas" with Natalie Maines. Even my father liked that one, and we have diametrically opposed musical tastes!

All in all, "Trouble in Shangri-La" was well worth the long wait. I only hope that I get to catch Stevie on tour sometime after September in or near Charleston, SC (hint, hint) so that I may enjoy these songs and her classics live.
