Free Music Notes for Trouble in Shangri-LaFree Music Review: A Rock Survivor Comes Full Circle Hit: 5 Stars
Trouble in Shangri-La, Stevie Nicks' seventh solo album brings the singer-song writer full circle. Stevie goes from the highs and lows of fame dealt with in Bella Donna to the reconcilliation of those highs and lows in her new CD. The title of Stevie's new CD, Trouble in Shangri-La will cause those who just don't "get Stevie" to shrug and say there she goes again! Airy Fairy, 53 year old Stevie singing about love lost and found and using the hot young stars of today: Macy Gray, Natalie Maines, and Sheryl Crow among others to sell records. If you buy into this attitude, you will be depriving yourself of Rock perfection! Stevie is a true Rock survivor with a lot to say. Anyone, be they male or female will find something to relate to on this CD. Be it the professional doubts of That Made Me Stronger, where Stevie wonders if she is still capable of being a viable songwriter, to the haunting "Miss You" where she sings, "I have so many questions about love, about hate, about strained relationships..." This is a CD for both die hard fans who know her entire life story and can recite VH-1's Behind The Music by heart, and the newcomers: Sheryl Crow fans perhaps, who are in for the treat of a life time from rock and roll's Jill of all Trades!
Free Music Review: Stevie Nicks fans, brace yourself! Hit: 5 Stars
Not since Bella Donna has Stevie produced a full set of songs that fit together, yet have their own individuality as in the great line-up on "Trouble In Shangri-la." There's 13 smashes waiting to happen: the title song starts slow, yet builds into a story that is full and rich; "Sorcerer" is the same Nicks composition that Marilyn Martin performed for the "Streets Of Fire" soundtrack, yet Stevie adds her own "Gold Dust Woman" vibe to this rendition; the new singles "Planets Of The Universe" and "Everyday" are racing up the charts and for good reason. "Planets" is probably her most radio friendly hit since "Rooms On Fire" from twelve years ago. "Everyday" is a smooth, heartfelt song sung in Stevie's deepest, huskier vocals to date. "Too Far From Texas" will touch anybody who has to say good-bye to their soulmate. "Fall From Grace" was premiered on the Blockbuster Awards weeks ago and is a satisfying rock gem. "Love Changes" is unlike anything Stevie has done and to good results, very contemporary. So many songs and I'm running out of space! This record is for fans, old and new...you won't be disappointed!
Free Music Review: Good To Have Her Back Hit: 5 Stars
After a hiatus, Stevie Nicks returned in May 2001 with her first new album of new material since 1994's STREET ANGEL. Time well spent I would say. This album is nothing short of amazing folks. The album starts off with a lot of energy, in the catchy title track which will stay in your head with its great chorus. Lyrically the album is very strong and consistent. The album continues with some great songs, "Candlebright", "Sorcerer". "Planets Of the Universe" is a unique song, which is definately a highlight on the album. Stevie works with Sheryl Crow on "It's Only Love" which was written and produced by Sheryl, as was other songs on the album. Sheryl also does her own version of "It's Only Love" on her 2002 disc C'MON C'MON. Other guest artists on this disc include Macy Gray, Natalie Maines and Sarah McLachlan. Other highlights here include "I Miss You", "That Made Me Stronger", "Every Day" and more, all the songs are just great and she brings this certain aura to each song which is beautiful. Her voice is so full of resonance and emotion. Overall TROUBLE IN SHANGRI LA is one of her most consistent albums, since 1981's BELLADONNA.
Free Music Review: Stevie Nicks' best solo work since Rock A Little Hit: 5 Stars
First it is important to take into consideration that the music of Stevie Nicks (her unique raspy voice and mystical, sometimes spacey lyrics) is an acquired taste, period. Some listeners will never be able to enjoy or appreciate her as an artist because none of her work (from "Rhiannon" to "Trouble In Shangri-la) will appeal to them, and that's just fine. With regard to the new album, I think it contains some her best work ever whether it be compared with her solo work or her work with Fleetwood Mac. The arrangements are fresh and exciting and the production of the album is very well-crafted, courtesy of collaborator/producer Sheryl Crow. While some of the songs contain stronger songwriting than others, there are no weak tracks in this set from start to finish. Her collaborations with different artists on the album were well-chosen and each artist complements Stevie very well. (Stevie has always had the distinct ability to harmonize with other vocalists well.) While she has surely lost some of her range as far as pitch goes, she has only strengthened her intensity and conviction that she brings to the lyrics of her songs. Congratulations on the new album, Stevie, and thanks for all the music.
Free Music Review: Simply Divine Hit: 5 Stars
I've never been much of a Fleetwood Mac fan but once I took just one glance at the cover of Stevie Nick's Trouble In Shangri-La cd its appeal instantly allured me. I know that I shouldn't judge a book by its cover but, come on people, it helps when you're just browsing! So I placed the listening headphones over my ears and was suddely stilled into comotose. I must of listen to the first song at least three times through before leaving the store... Another standout was Planets Of The Universe. That tune and Every Day is probably the closest to Stevie's old sound. I fervently enjoy all of the spellbinding tracks that are conjured here (with the exception of Too Far From Texas) but my absolute favorites have got to be Trouble In Shangri-La, Planets Of The Universe, Bombay Sapphires, and Love Is, which has Sarah McLachlan backing vocals (beautifully might I add) and gracing us with her dexterous play at the piano and guitar... Stevie Nick's withholds a power unlike many to entrance and to drug you with her bewitching lyrics and one-of-a-kind voice. Trouble In Shangri-La should not be a buy to hesitate on. So let the magic of her newest solo work weave a spell on your soul .... Highly, highly recommended!
