Free Music Notes for Essential Stevie Ray VaughanFree Music Review: Awesome collection but.... Hit: 4 Stars
has anyone noticed that the song "Life Without You" is missing lyrics towards the end of the song? I dug out my cassette version of Soul to Soul and played this song and the last lyrics are as follows: "life without you, all the love you passed my way...the angels have waited for you so long, now they have their way...take your place". either i got the misfortune of grabbing the only collection with this blunder or for some reason jimmie vaughan omitted these lyrics when remastering his brother's music. these lyrics are what made the song for me and its ruined. also missing is the song "Ain't Gone 'N' Give Up On Love" but since both discs are near its full time limit i dont know which song to omit to make room for "Ain't Gone 'N' Give Up On Love". but then again what greatest hits from any artist has every song you know and like. nonetheless this is a spectacular collection from the dearly missed stevie ray vaughan.
Free Music Review: Excellent value for the newcomer... Hit: 4 Stars
Yeah, I read the review below by a 'music fan' who says there are an overabundance of Vaughan comps and while that's true, this one has one thing that the earlier Greatest Hits doesn't have: VALUE.This two CD set comes in at a price considerably cheaper than if you bought the two earlier Greatest Hits CDs, separately. And unless you are a Vaughan completist who HAS to have the four studio albums, the 'live' stuff plus "Family Style" with Jimmie or the SRV box, then this one is a pretty good value, price-wise for a beginner new to Vaughan's work. This is all a part of Sony's 'Essential' series that's coming out during 2002-2003 year and for them not to do an 'Essential comp on SRV would, I believe, be quite noticed by SOME fans out there. After all, SRV was an important artist for Columbia/Epic in the 1980s and that's what this series is about.
Free Music Review: Excellent for Newcomers to SRV/DT Hit: 4 Stars
The Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan is an outstanding introduction to the greatest guitarist of the last 30 years. Being an SRV/DT completist, I already have these songs in one form or another, so I would have liked to have seen some additional, previously unreleased tracks. If you're new to SRV, pick up this collection first, then work your way backwards from In Step (his masterpiece) to Texas Flood for some incredible album tracks not included on The Essential SRV. Then get Live at Montreaux 1982-1985 for a pair of absolutely blistering live sets. Just ensure that Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) is played at MAXIMUM volume for greatest enjoyment! RIP, SRV - there will NEVER be another musician of your calibre.
Free Music Review: a bargin Hit: 4 Stars
The album is exactly what I expected from the artist simply awesome. The vocals and strings are soulful. You'll listen to it over and over.
Free Music Review: Great Artist...Spotty Selections...Unexpected Hit: 3 Stars
Stevie Ray...What can one say? Wow, Awesome, and a legend before his time.
I have debated with so many the precise presence, sheer volume Stevie emitted from his guitar, through his soul. Yes there are many great guitarits. Clapton, Hendrix, Page...just to name a few. What Stevie brought was electrifying and still very personal. He was in a class of his own. So why this review? I have been listening to Stevie for quite some time. I own most of his records. (CD) I even purchased his single-disc "Greatest Hits." I was relatively happy to have his biggest hits on one convenient disc. So one day I'm in Target, out of the corner of my eye I notice this beaming CD...(drumroll) "The Essential"...I almost fell over, seriously. See, I own a few "Essential" CD's: Dylan, Billy Joel, ELO...So obviously when I saw this I thought I was purchasing a gold mine...
While it does contain great work, why the need to include so many "live"
versions? Bottom line? If I want a live set, I'll buy a live set. This could've been a great, blown-away 2-disc set. It is great for picking the selections that should've been on his single disc, to transfer to your iPod...
