Free Music Review: I'm not too big on live performances over studio cuts
Hit: 3 Stars

The one thing that disappointed me on this collection was that they opted for the excessively long 12 minute live version of Hendrix's Voodoo Child. Why not the superior 8 minute studio version found on the Greatest Hits 2 collection? It seriously rocks and was one of the reasons I purchased this set. Wished I had just opted for Greatest Hits 1 & 2 instead of this bloated collection. Most of the other songs on this collection are the same versions found on the others. Why the change-up on this one song? I thought I was getting a better deal by going with this double-disc set. Greatest Hits and "Best of" collections are for the casual listener, like myself, not the hard-core fan who likely has the individual albums to begin with and has little use for a compilation. Why throw in alternate takes of the hits? Just one man's opinion. Still, I'm disappointed I spent this much on a CD with which I'm not entirely happy.

Free Music Review: The Essentials Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble
Hit: 3 Stars

Epic - The Essentials Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble has 2 cds. I bought the cd because it was recommended to me by a co-worker. It was her favorite cd. I like listening to cds that other people enjoy to see if we have the same taste in music. I can't say I really loved this cd. It is okay. I do like the song "Willie The Wimp" though. But a lot of Stevie Ray Vaughan's song reminded me of other rock stars. Like Eric Clapton. There were just too many similarities with other musician to prevent his music to be unique. I guess that is what I look for in a band. Cd # 2 is pretty good. I like the long guitar solos the most. You can find them on cd 2.

Too much Stevie Ray for me. I loved Crossfire but not much more will make my playlists unless I open a rib joint and play hm for background. The quality of recording could have also been better

Free Music Review: Disappointing Quality - Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan
Hit: 2 Stars

There are several reviews for other SRV best hits disc compilations on Amazon (e.g., The Real Deal I and II compilations which are two separate discs) having reviews that suggest buying The Essential SRV & DT compilation instead because it is less expensive (that's true) and apparently at one time had more tracks than The Real Deal I and II (that's no longer true, both sets have 33 tracks total). So I followed the advice of the reviews and purchased The Essential SRV & DT two disc set instead. After listening to this set, I noticed on Shake for Me (track 1) there is a dropout in the audio from time 2:03-2:06 minutes during the track. And on Pride & Joy (track 4), one of his most popular hits, there is a fluttering sound audible at many times during the track, reminding me of the sound of a grasshopper rubbing its wings during summer mating season. And on the live take of Superstition (track 8 on the second disc) the snare drum is pushed way past headroom and consequently has a distorted sound throughout the entire track which was obviously not intended by the musicians. I would say that the poor recordings of Pride & Joy, and Superstition, are enough to make me want to return this set and purchase The Real Deal I and II discs instead, even though it would cost about $10 more for those two seperate discs versus this dual disc set. The Essential SRV & DT compilation is produced under the EPIC/Legacy label, while The Real Deal I & II appear to be under the Sony label. Hopefully the Sony productions are better quality recordings. Both sets have the same number of tracks but differ in that two songs are completely different, and also The Essential SRV & DT has several more live versions of the songs in common between the two compilations. Regarding the two tracks that differ, The Essential SRV & DT compilation has the instrumental "Little Wing" and the song "Long Way from Home" which are not on the Sony compilations. The Sony compilations The Real Deal I and II have the songs "Aint gonna give up on your Love" and "Pipeline" which are not present in the Epic compilation. Hope this helpful.

Free Music Review: Oh, come on...

Is this necessary? There are not one, but two Stevie Ray Vaughan greatest hits collections already. Plus the blues compilation Blues at Sunrise. How does an artist who only recorded four studio albums, and whose professional career lasted a mere five years, possibly need FOUR compilations? I hate when record companies just repackage the same material over and over again, tossing in a few new tracks to get you to buy it. It's an epidemic in today's music world. The previous compilations were not that old and are in no dire need of remastering. I was very pleased with last year's release of Live at Montreaux 1982 and 1985 (even though there was some recycled material) but this is just pointless. If there's no more unreleased material in the vaults, then there is simply no need for more Stevie Ray Vaughan releases. A collection of outtakes and rarities would be nice, and certainly another live album would be welcome. There aren't even any new tracks on this collection.

The two-star rating does not reflect the quality of the music herein. It is merely indicative of the inanity of such a repackaging. The music is excellent. Stevie Ray Vaughan was one of the greatest guitarists of our time. The music is essential. However, I would recommend that prospective listeners purchase the original albums (there's only four of them, for pete's sake) instead of wasting time and money on these stupid compilations.

If you're new to SRV, there's no better introduction than Texas Flood.
