Free Music Review: Great Debut Album - Not My Favorite - Stop with the Bickering Already
Hit: 4 Stars

In the vast world of debut albums, "Texas Flood" is one that impresses me the most. Stevie Ray Vaughan had been around the block a few times before recording it, which is obvious from his mastery of the material and his own instrument. Whether he was the world's best guitarist is purely subjective, so bickering over whether he was better than anyone else is wasting everyone's time, which seems to be a popular male pasttime when it comes to music. If you love Stevie Ray Vaughan, love him; if you don't, then don't. But please don't make comparisons between him, Vito Bratta, Eric Clapton, B.B. King or anyone else. It's just stupid.

Now, as much as I like "Texas Flood," it is not my favorite Vaughan album. My favorite is "In Step," which Vaughan recorded about six years later. My very subjective reason is as follows. Vaughan's guitar in "Texas Flood" is always front and center, and for the most part everything else is back beat. I find in this album few breaks from what is essentially a wall of guitar sound, which limits the degree to which the band is capable of expressing variation and tenderness - undeniably important components of the blues.

Contrast this with "In Step." Here Vaughan's playing sounds better and the band is capable of expressing a broader range of emotion because the two play as an integrated whole. It's evident from the album's first track, "The House is Rockin'" in which Vaughan allows his guitar to step back so the bass and percussion can move forward then recede, move forward then recede. There's no wall here: there are dimension and depth. To my ears this give-and-take makes "In Step" a more confident, more expressive album than "Texas Flood" on nearly every track.

By Jesus, however, what a great debut "Texas Flood" is.

This legendary 1983 debut by the fallen torchbearer of the '80s-'90s blues revival sounds even more dramatic in its remixed and expanded edition. Stevie Ray Vaughan's guitar and vocals are a bit brighter and more present on this 14-track CD. And the newly included bonus numbers (an incendiary studio version of the slow blues "Tin Pan Alley" that was left off the original release, and live takes of "Testify," "Mary Had a Little Lamb," and the instrumental "Wham!" from a 1983 Hollywood concert) illuminate the raw soul and passion that propelled his artistry even when he was under the spell of drug addiction. Texas Flood captures Vaughan as rockin' blues purist, paying tribute in his inspired six-string diction to his influences Larry Davis (who wrote the title track), Buddy Guy, Albert King, and Jimi Hendrix. His own contemplative "Lenny," a tribute to his wife at the time, also suggests a jazz-fueled complexity that would infuse his later work. --Ted Drozdowski
