Free Music Review: Amazing Debut of My Favorite Blues Gutarist Ever
Hit: 5 Stars

Oh man, where the hell has SRV's debut been all my life? Stevie Ray Vaughan is easiy my favorite blues guitarists ever, and that's no feat considering the competition. Sure, I don't think Stevie is as monumental or as important as Hendrix or Robert Johnson, but when it comes to blues guitar, Stevie Ray Vaughan plays his guitar, making it sing and hitting me more than any other blues guitarists, even more impressive because this list includes other legends like BB King and Hendrix (certainly some of the best guitarists I've ever heard, I don't care about their hype either, I really believe it). And Texas Flood is one hell of a debut to show why.

One great thing about Stevie is the way he plays the Blues. Like Hendrix or Page before him, Him and his double Trouble band isn't afraid to put a ton of energy and spice into the recordings, something that losers like John Mayer are never able to do. Speaking of modern blues, I have to be honest with myself, I've never heard any good traditional style blues after Howlin' Wolf or Muddy Waters, almost all of it lacks grit and authenticity, seems fitting how rich in it's style that old blues had and never will come back. Just try listening to that crap like that John Mayer, Blues Traveler (Ha ha) and the like tries to spew out. As George Carlin says, it's a sacrilege. However, as Led Zeppelin taught us, taking the emotion of blues and intensifying it like an electric chair does to a body, can make blues a powerful force emotional enough to resurrect a dead corpse. And that's what Texas Flood does. Stevie Ray's music isn't as loud and raunchy as Led Zeppelin, nor is it. Texas Flood is much more rooted in traditional rock and roll styles along with country and Texan music (hence the name, of course), but Stevie Ray's band plays with a ton of influences into one and brings forth a varied batch of musical sounds.

So why is Stevie such an excellent blues guitarist? Not many other guitarists can make his guitar sing with such passion, emotion, and blues. His playing is just so damn rich, and his guitar tone is absolutely perfect. Crystal clear, a bit gritty, but extremely tasteful and ridiculously soulful. The musical notes have a way of making you just close your eyes and digging deep into your , and the world around you seems to fade away from view. There's a reason why so many blues guitarists (watch the way BB King Plays and he looks like he's channeling some unknown force too powerful to explain) just look like they are channeling, and Stevie Ray makes sure you feel it across the room so much that it enters your brain and taps into your soul. I can't really quite explain it until you hear it, but SRV's guitar playing is like none other.

Highlights? Everything. From the rock and roll rave up Love Struck Baby, the double shot of amazing Texas blues of, the title track, to the absolutely shimmering and beautiful Lenny, with not a note wasted anywhere in the whole song. Really, all classic. And really, how the heck can you go wrong with a musician that is able to turn into a nursery rhyme, a little kids song at that, into an awesome, scorching song that absolutely lights up a fire upon it. No one has been able to do that before, and do right (sorry Chuck Berry). As you can see, every damn song on this album rules to the high heavens.

Apparently there are some people who like to bash people who love Stevie, and give them some crap about how you don't know blues, or something crazy like that. Well, I've tried listening to all the other greats, and while they certainly are legends as well, Stevie's sound and playing is impeccable to me, no other guitarist has been able to channel the instrument into my emotions like SRV does. Don't fool yourself, if you claim to be into blues rock and don't own any of Stevie's records, you are crazy. Texas Flood is still my favorite, but the follow up . His last album is terrific as well, although Texas Flood is a hair better in my opinion. Either one you get, though, you can't go wrong. Your rock and roll collection is complete without a little bit of SRV.
