Free Music Review: RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "THE KING OF THE WORLD BLUES REVIEWERS, REVIEWS THE "PRINCE OF THE BLUES!"
Hit: 4 Stars

Shaq's two favorite electric blues guitarist's of all-time are, Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan. To ask if I love Stevie... can be answered in a million ways! A simple, right between the eyes answer is: "My personalized license plates are "SRV **"! Besides hearing just about everything by Stevie, watching everything about Stevie, and reading 2 biographies about Stevie... Shaq, "The King Of The World Blues Reviewer" will always give you an unbiased review. I rate this 4 stars, because it's great (and you should buy it!) but it's not one of his all-time classic 5 stars. There are things about a Shaq review, you may not like, but they'll always be the truth, even when there are tears in my eyes and pain in my heart from the loss of Stevie. Brother Jimmie, pieced this CD together, from old studio tracks between 1984 and 1989, after Stevie's tragic death. One of the cuts is "The Sky Is Crying", not the great, longer, live version, but great nonetheless. A touching, poignant, closing, song "Life By The Drop", which chronicles, a fight against addiction, which Stevie knew well. What a way for the last 3 lines of lyrics, on the posthumous, release, of Stevie's CD! It literally "could have been" the last words he uttered on his way to blues heaven: "WE'RE LIVIN OUR DREAMS, MY MIND'S STOPPED ACHIN', THAT'S HOW IT HAPPENS LIVIN LIFE BY THE DROP".

Music triggers memories for me and this disk brought back some wonderful memories about where my life was at that time.

Free Music Review: Lovingly Produced Tribute
Hit: 5 Stars

All these years later, this is still a difficult disc to listen to. Read the liner notes, which include comments by Stevie's brother Jimmy, Double Trouble bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton - as well as Stevie himself. In sum, these comments and other historical tidbits provided by Dan Forte make for a poignent backdrop to these excellent outtakes. The tunes work just fine as an album, pointing towards Stevie's own inspirations, including Elmore James, Albert King, Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters and Lonnie Mack.

Two tracks in particular bring out strong blues pangs - Little Wing and Life By The Drop. The music stands out in stark relief and is captured with such clarity and dynamic range that Stevie seems to be suspended lifelike in the three dimensional space in front of the listener. Like Hendrix, many focus on Stevie's guitar playing and seemingly miss the salt-of-the-earth vocals that glue the songs together. Absolutely priceless.

Free Music Review: Don't pass this one by
Hit: 5 Stars

I first became aware of Stevie's music when the single "The Sky is Cryin" was released, not long after his death. I remember being sooo impressed, I immediately went out and bought this album. I was blown away. I came to realize that I had heard some of his stuff (Pride & Joy, Cold Shot) But this album exposed me to his brillance. His cover of "Little Wing" is just so soulful, I hope no one hates for me for saying I'd rather listen to Stevie's version then the Hendrix one. The tile track has some some of greatest guitar work ever, in my humble opinion. It saddens me when I listen to "Life by the Drop" because even thought it's lyrics make it so clear that Stevie had faced and conquered his demons, he didn't live long enough to bask in the glory of it. A truly wonderful track from a truly magnificent album, DON'T pass it by.

Free Music Review: Guitar heaven
Hit: 5 Stars

As Eric Clapton has said, Stevie had a direct line running from his heart to the guitar neck, bypassing his brain altogether. It means he didn't have to think ahead about what he was going to play, it just flowed straight through. This album is a great example of that statement. He OWNS the guitar and utilizes every avenue of his technique and mastery to produce sounds that no other guitarist will ever produce. That sound comes from his daily practicing, his strength and his dedication to his influences. While these are definitely outtakes, I believe they more clearly represent SRV's Texas R&B roots than any other cd. And, while risking redundancy from other previous reviews, "Little Wing" is pure guitar heaven. Those of us who knew him and loved him and his artistry know without a doubt that that's where he's playing now.
