Free Music Notes for The Sky Is CryingFree Music Review: He's a Legend for a Reason Hit: 5 StarsIf you want to understand what the perfect synthesis of Blues and Rock sounds like ... if you want to experience one of the few musical geniuses to come along in the last 20 years ... if you want to understand how Kenny Wayne Sheppard made a hugely popular album riding the coat tails of a dead man ... this is the CD you want. The best way I can sum it up is to say it's the closest thing to rock-n-roll perfection I've heard since the Who. That's not to say there's only one definition of perfection in the music world -- there are many -- but very few artists ever come close to attaining any of those definitions. Stevie Ray Vaughn was a genius with the guitar in the same way Jordan was a genius with a basketball or Chuck Yeager was a genius behind the controls of experimental aircraft. Just give this CD a chance. You won't be sorry you did.
Free Music Review: Simply Awesome Hit: 5 StarsLike so many albums culled together after an artist's death, the continuity of the overall album is not like previous SRV albums. Having said that, there are so many wonderful songs on this album that you soon forget that point. SRV's playing is fluid and filled with emotion... a true sign that he was back at the top of his game. The first time I heard this redition of "Little Wing" I was mesmerized; it is by the far the most inspired playing you can ever expect to hear. This song alone would make the album a 5 star recipient and there is so much more as well. Definitely a must have!
Free Music Review: Review of Billy Ray Vaughn's "The Sky is Falling." Hit: 1 StarsI had not had the opportunity/fortune to ever hear Vaughn's works before selecting him as a class assignment(JMC 490) and so I delved into his bio first and then listened only to the entire 10 tracks of this cd only and my remarks concern exclusively these arrangements. After playing the album several times, I came to the conclusion that if I had CD-RW capabilities, I would only copy #10, "Life By The Drop." On this track Vaughn used an acoustical guitar without electrical amplification. The piece was masterfully played, beautiful to listen to and thoroughly enjoyable. There was a traditional sound and feeling both musically with the lyrics conveying truly a blues message. I really liked this piece over and above any of the other tracks and if this is what Stevie Ray Vaughn is all about, I could be a fan.
Free Music Review: One of the bests from SRV!! Hit: 4 StarsSRV was a great disciple of Lonnie Mack and what we can understand is that he learned that lessons like no other! Magical guitar riffs in an astonishing velocity, and with great Albert King's influences.A great album!!
Free Music Review: A Life-Changing Event... Hit: 5 StarsThat's not hyperbole. Man, I still remember it. It was 1995. I was browsing in a record store and came upon this album. I didn't know who the hell it was-- it wasn't like anything I would usually buy-- but I decided to try sometehing different. I was blown right out of my pants. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I played the tape so many times in 6 months that it started to wear out. It made me want to learn to play, even though I never thought about playing the guitar before-- it was that good, that moving.Every song on this CD is amazing. How can you talk about good and better when you've reached this level of mastery? You can't. It's like asking which van Gogh painting is your favorite. Still, could you ever buy a van Gogh for under $20? That being said, there is one song on this CD that is maybe the best pure electric guitar ever recorded: "Little Wing" is a masterpiece among masterpieces. It has it all: such feeling in the slow sections that you cry, such blistering guitar in the power sections that you are stunned, and such subtle mastery throughout that you can hear different nuances each time you listen to the song. Just check out when and how he uses the natural harmonics-- and how he even throws in the Wes Montgomery Jazz/octave work-- each in exactly the right place. This guy wasn't just a guitar maniac-- he was a Master, with a capital "M"-- and on top of it all, he was a wonderful, caring man. Putting "Life by the Drop" as the last song on the compilation is almost too much for me to handle-- knowing that, when that last note finishes resonating, there will NEVER be any more... I cry every time I see his bio on MTV-- when I think about that helicopter crash. There is something wrong with a world in which a man like this gets only 35 years. I cry.
