Free Music Notes for The Sky Is Crying

Free Music Review: One of Stevie's best
Hit: 4 Stars

This album was produced after SRV died and consists mainly of out tracks from other albums. However the album is still one of his best. In particular, 'Little Wing', 'So Excited' and 'the Sky is crying' are brilliant. Most of the other tracks are also memorable. For the best SRV, I consider you should listen to the original 'Live Alive' and also 'Texas Flood'.

Free Music Review: Wow, This is supposed to be the outtakes
Hit: 5 Stars

Stevie Ray often had a problem when he recorded. On The "In Step" album, for example, he had 14 completed songs and room enough for only 10. So, the magnificent slide work of "Boot Hill" was left off that release. It happens to be the only available example of his slide work. Most outtake albums are usually fillers and alternate takes meant for the diehards. "The Sky is Crying" is Stevie in full glory, from the beautiful homage to Albert King in the title track to the re-shaped "Little Wing." He wisely dropped the vocal in that cut and gave his best guitar workout. A little Jimi, a little Jazzy, some blues and all brillance. Turn it up loud enough and you and hear the amp tubes burning, Wow. There are other highlights, too. the fun of "Close To You" as SRV bows to Muddy and Willie Dixon. "Chitlins Con Carne" shows Stevie's jazz playing and its influence on "Riviera Paradise." "Life By The Drop" is heart rending as it shows a man who took his life back from drugs and alcohol. The acoustic pre-"Unplugged" guitar is pure emotion as though Stevie were in the room with you. Okay, so it's not exactly an album because it's a collection of material that had not been previously relesased. But, it shows that Stevie Ray Vaughn had plenty of talent left to spare. It's a reminder of his gift and how proundly he is missed. Each time I hear Stevie, I count my blessings.

Free Music Review: What could have been
Hit: 5 Stars

THE SKY IS CRYING is an album of outtakes and alternate versions of songs the SRV had never been able to put to record. Here this songs were released after his tragic death and if these songs are just outtakes, we are left thinking what could have been. The songs rock and show how talented a musician SRV really was. BOOT HILL is a rockin number that kicks off the album and it is a dirty blues rocker that takes no prisoners. THE SKY IS CRYING is next and we can hear SRV playing some mean slide on this slow tempo blues track that stands out. LIFE BY THE DROP is an acoustic gem that shows off another side of SRV guitar playing and is the 2nd best song off the album. EMPTY ARMS, MAY I HAVE A TALK WITH YOU, LITTLE WING AND WHAM are songs that must be listened to and I think that all who read this review will enjoy them and this album.

Free Music Review: Great CD
Hit: 5 Stars

First heard this album on a jukebox in a little Italian restaurant (of all places) and fell in love with it. Boot Hill is my favorite cut on this record, but they're all great; The Sky is Crying, Chitlins Con Carne, the whole nine yards and 40+ minutes. Definitely worth it.

Free Music Review: Possibly SRV's Best Studio Work
Hit: 4 Stars

This is an amazing collection of posthumously released "rejects", & is arguably SRV's best studio work. The material is quite varied, including the fast-and-furious "Wham", the delicate "Little Wing", & the smooth, jazzy "Chitlins Con Carne". It also features some of his best & most expressive vocal performances including the growling "Boot Hill" & the introspective "Life By the Drop". Other highlights include the classic slow blues of the title track & the rollicking "Close to You". Unlike many posthumous compilations, this one is a very worthwhile purchase.
